well, I'm proud to say that I was one who doubted his age from the beginning. I took crap (of course) from a lot here on letsrun, but anyone with a brain could easily see the guy is not 17...

Yhea a 12:53 for a 17 year old is mind boggling.

I think most of us already assumed this.

But keep in mind that 12:53 is the 4th fastest indoor 5000 ever run. It doesn't matter what his age is. Bernard Lagat's going to have a fight on his hands.

I'm positive you're not the only person suspicious of this guy's age. No one in their right mind could honestly believe this ridiculously obvious claim: 17 year old runs 12:53 indoors. Sadly, I think the majority of folks feel hopeless about this situation at this point, myself included. For years, colleges have been recruiting athletes KNOWN to have already competed in university games prior to admission to American colleges. Athletic Directors routinely sign off papers that allows documented 28 year olds to compete under the guise of 21 year old freshman/sophomores. It has become a pervasive problem nothing short of corruption.

Consider the number of athletes and years passed without media exposure and legal actions against this type of behavior. I equate it to fraud. It is perpetual and deliberate deception and is on par with PED-use. It is a diliberate attempt to deceive, steal, and abuse a system. I hope I'm wrong, but I strongly feel the day is nearing when American high school class records will be broken much more frequently, particularly by folks "older" than the record-holders albeit in the same class/grade. See Lukas and Cheserek.

It obviously matters to those in Kenya, as shown by this article. Furthermore, it matters to us when these people come over here, enroll in our school system, and break our junior records saying that they are younger than they actually are. It may not matter to us in his case at the moment, but it will. Yes, it's still a freakish fast time, but that's not the point. We're not trying to take away from the performance, just trying to put an end to the cheating and lying. It matters.

Well now, which of your junior records did an outsider break?

You are essentially saying that runners should only be allowed to compete in the county they were born in. That's never going to be accepted. The Olympics would die.

Furthermore, schools in the U.S. love foreign students. The students pay higher tuition, and subsidize the education for U.S. students. Were you aware of that schools need foreign student money, desperately?

It's fairly funny how the article seems to imply that this is an isolated case, and it's not something that's ever happened before.

You don't understand. They cheat by lying about their ages at first, and then they cheat by being genetically superior and changing their citizenship as they age.
