It is a strange distance, but what is stopping some of the best 400m runners from just breaking a 60 second 500m? Seems easy enough.

46+13 is hard my dude
It all about doing the tempo runs and easy miles.
If it was hotly contested by the best in the world (pretty much they add it to the olympics and it gets put on the docket for every meet in season) I would think something in the neighborhood of 57.5 would be about as fast as anyone would go. I reckon you would need about 43.high ability to put that down, coming at it from a strength side. An athlete like that is rare, but we already have him, and he is white.
At least that is my opinion. a 44.high+12.high sounds absolutely ridiculous, but so does every other record in the books, so why the hell not.
If you average the 400 world record and the 600 world best, you get just under 58. That would be my guess for what the world outdoor 500 best would be.
Renato says he saw Shoenlebe run a workout of 3 x 500 in under 60 each, but that must have been with running starts.

Are you talking about MJ, I think that man is black?
MJ doesn't fit any of the criteria I mentioned (black man, who was a 43.18 runner, and also held the 200m WR?), and I think you know that.
A guy like Alberto Juantorena, gold medalist in 1976 Montreal Olympic 400 and 800, with pr's of 44.26 and 1:43.5 could have definitely run sub 58. He could have come through in 45 mid and run 12.xx for a sub 58sec 500. Rudisha could definitely run a very quick 500 (and world record 600 too) im sure he could be 58ish.
I wonder what Butch Reynolds could have done in the 500. His 200 PR (20.46) was slower than Wariner's. Reynolds ran his last 100 in the 43.29 race in 11.2, which is faster than Wariner or MJ have finished in any of their 400 races.
The world record for the 500m outdoors is 60.08 seconds by Donato Sabia in 1984
I think OTC or someone should organize an outdoor exhibition 500m race like how they did a 600m one with matt Scherer and Symmonds.
56 could be done easily enough by the elite.

What is Wheating open 400 meter time?
I'm not sure but he's run 47.3 for a relay split.

44.26/1'43.50 ->58.34
rudisha with
45.50/1'41.01 ->58.89
albeit, he probably was in 45-flat shape at his peak, as he said that 45.5 was off no speed-work
45.00/1'41.01 ->58.47
i'd very much doubt anyone can break 58

alberto j was probably good for sub 143 and 43.9 without heats.
so what does a 142.8 plus a 43.9 yield for 500m and 600m?
World record should be around 58.4. No one is breaking 58.
Roddie Haley ran 59.82 indoors in 1986.

If you're right, 57.89 and 1'12.43.
