D. Brown is the man.
I?ll start by saying that.
In 2002, I wrote Alberto Salazar to ask about the Oregon Project. I was a 13:50, 28:30 guy. He ignored my first email, then replied back after my second telling me that they were only recruiting A level guys who could break 28:00. I thought it was an odd thing to say, seeing as I was pretty competitive with some of the guys on the newly formed team. He dismissed me pretty easily. No problem--it wasn't the first time I've been rejected. I'm a runner!
Now, more than two years later, what the hell??
Dave Davis? Ahman Dirks? Who the hell are these guys? I just had a discussion with my significant other and she made a remark about, "well 13:36 or 38 (Johnson and Donnelly) isn?t that bad." But is it good? Have these guys improved? When the top collegians are finishing a race and you?re barely on the straightaway, does that show you?re a successful professional athlete?
Why wouldn?t they get Brad Hauser, Matt Lane, etc. on the Nike Oregon Project? Why was Salazar so cocky and pretentious? I know I?ll probably get a bunch of ?you?re just pissed because they turned you down? comments. Well, I am?kind of. Not really. I couldn't sit in a frat house playing video games with running dorks for more than about an hour. But the idea of Nike making this investment has always interested and impressed me. Alberto also told me that having a girlfriend cancelled out my candidacy (bachelors only).
Salazar is in a position where he could do so much for the sport. But he has this arrogant attitude and only accepts a guy like Philemon Hanneck (who, as a NIKE athlete, gets arrested for hiring a prostitute)?? I can't have a girlfriend, but a foreign born runner can join the club and get a hooker?
It doesn?t make sense. I know everyone has always said wait a year or two until these guys are running 2:10. What the hell is 2:10 anyway? Go to the IAAF page and read about how Italy has like 6 guys (2:08-2:10) vying for the LAST spot on the Olympic team this week. And these Nike Oregon Project guys aren?t running 2:10. They?re running slower than the top collegians. Much slower.
Dan Brown was a stud before he joined the Oregon Project. He just needed someone to sharpen up the corners.
Sorry to rant and rave. Nike has so much money, technology and innovation. It sucks to see results like these, and I think Alberto is a smug and ignorant leader in the sport.
