so i have a question on hand timed versus fully automated timing. how much time is hand timed versus FAT? does it add like a full second (i know it doesnt, but for questions sake im adding it), half a second, quarter second? does the event that would be in question also make a difference? i want to know because a potential record at my school is on the line and the original record was hand timed indoors (dont know why they didnt use FAT, but hey if it means the record goes down whatever)

My understanding, and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this, is that the 0.24 second figure comes from the Munich Games. As such it is a bit misleading because it measured the difference between automated timing and professional timers. Yes, timers do/did receive special training. It has been suggested that a more accurate conversion figure would be 0.4 seconds. Also, the length of the event does not make a difference. Now what all of this means in terms of how your coach converts the records, who knows. Best of luck.
Both hand and autotimes should be listed same as yard records should be listed alongside the meteric ones.
A good way to get hand times very close to FAT times is to stop the watch when you see the first step after the finish line. If you started at the first sight of smoke from the gun, you will usually be within 0.1 sec of the FAT time.
