Two years ago when Rupp anchored, I remember reading that he asked Wheating to get him the baton in second. Why don't more teams try to set up their anchors in the DMR? Leading at the last exchange is not an advantage if you're only up a second or two.
I completely agree. That was a pretty awful position to get the baton in...as the announcer said, "it's better to be the hunter than to be the hunted."
But a fresh Sheila Reid probably could have outkicked Jordan either way, by a second or two. Feel bad for Jordan, but a gutsy and awesome performance for her and she has nothing but greatness in her future.

Poor tactics...just like when Chelanga tried to run away from Rupp in NCAA XC and got blasted in the homestretch. Tactically naive.

As Hasay gets more experience (and having the Prelim before never helps) she will learn how to run off the front and still kick - that is what the best runners are able to do. Athletes do not need to slow down just to make sure their team isn't leading at the bell - that's ridiculous! There is no wind indoors so that detriment doesn't exist for leading - she should watch tapes of Viren holding off faster runners at the end of the Montreal 1976 5000m - it can be done. But is wasn't going to happen tonight against Reid. Nevertheless, a gutsy run from Jordan H., but then what else would one expect from her.
Jordan had the choice to stay on the rail and walk or step out to lane 2 and make somebody else lead it, if she didn't want the lead. She chose neither. This is big girl stuff.
She didn't have to lead jackshit. She made the choice to do so. She probably didn't feel that somebody else would run a 4:30 1600 and beat her. Not that I blame her. Learn and move on.
She ran a 4:30 split, which converts to 4:11 for 1500 meters, she should be proud of how she did. Yeah, her team lost but she did run a personal best in doing so. No shame in that. Great job Jordan!
