Here is something that I find curious: Lydiard was famous for liking mileage for his runners. Why is it then that Lydiard's best guys (at least among his original guys) were better the shorter the race was?

Murray Halberg: 13:38.2
Barry Magee: 2:19:04
1:44.3 is better than 3:54.1. 3:54.1 is better than 13:38.2, and 13:38.2 is better than 2:19:04.
What's up with that?
