they say this lady runs 80 miles a week and didn't start exercising until she was 60!

Oh, wow! What an inspiration to all and a lot of motivation for me.
Definitely amazing!
Wait a second. runs 80 mpw, and lifts weights, and gets by on 1700 calories per day? Something doesn't seem to add up... it seems like she would require more calories than that.
how does she run 80mpw? that's unbelievable, even i have trouble doing that sometimes
WOW!!![
"Instead, Shepherd concerns herself with her carefully formulated diet -- 1,700 calories a day, mostly comprised of boiled egg whites, chicken, vegetables and a liquid egg white drink -- and packing in the workouts needed to maintain her stunning physique." -
how does she run 80mpw and only eat 1700 calories? something doesnt make sense?
"She hit the gym, this time to keep a promise to her beloved sister. In 2007, she began running. She now runs in the park for two to three hours a day and has a 5K time of 28 minutes."
A great testimony for women to get in the weight room as well as run and do aerobic training. A balanced body is a healthy and beautiful thing.
She has genetics, not her fitness routine, to thank for her physical condition. The average 60 year old who attempted to start exercising like that would maim themselves.
Pretty amazing, but like the other guy said... calories don't seem to add up. What is her resting metabolism considering she has a reasonable level of muscle mass, then how much do burn from a 10+ mile run each day?
Hmm not sure wrote:

While 28 minutes may not be particularly fast for one who runs two-three hours a day, you must consider the fact that she's is, well...73 MOTHAFLIPPIN YEARS OLD! Awesome!
BMR at that age is gonna be low.. maybe around 1100-1200 cal/day. Running cal. close to a 1,000 a day. Still, she's gonna be at a cal. deficit. Someone tell her to eat more!
I should have started off my earlier post by saying - This woman is AWESOME!!! She obviously looks great! And, based on the short video, I like her attitude too.
It wouldn't surprise me if something was lost in the reporting regarding her 80 mpw and other activities and 1700 calorie intake. It just jumped out at me as a bit off.
Regardless - IMPRESSIVE LADY!!!

I calculated her BMR (guessing about 105 pounds) and got 1060 kcal for an average 105 pound 5'5" 73 year old. I'm assuming she isn't running as fast as her 5k pace on her daily runs and slower running is more metabolically efficient, so I doubt she's burning more than 75 cal/mile, maybe even 65-70. If she's lower than average for BMR, maybe she's like 900 or something and lowest case scenario for running is maybe 700, so that would give her a 100 calorie allotment for her other workouts. Agreed, 1700 sounds a little low, but I could believe as low as 1900 if her mileage is correct. Maybe she's exaggerating mileage.
By the way, I just athlinksed her and it's a pretty interesting profile. She's run the Baltimore Marathon i times from 2001 to 2010 and her trend is that she's still getting faster:
2001: 6:53
2002: Didn't run
2003: 6:26
2004: 6:30
2005: 6:34
2006: 6:30
2007: 6:07
2008: 5:33
2009: 5:56
2010: 5:14
She looked pretty stable from 03-06, but has undeniably gotten faster since around 69 or 70.
I'll be the first.....
I'd do her...
if she's running 2-3 hrs/day and hitting like 12 milers then she's sporting close to a 12.5 min pace which is pretty close to power walking, so i could see her calories being a little lower there. but it still seems off, i bet she eats a lil more and runs a lil less than advertised. still though,i hope im in half her shape when im pushing 75
I'd imagine with her muscle mass her BMR might be more than the average 73 year old, then you have to factor in some additional calories burned during her weight training. It's not like she's resting all the time she isn't running.
My guess... perhaps some weeks she might run 60-80 miles but most weeks more like an hour a day most days and maybe she misses a day or two some weeks. It could be that she doesn't use a gps watch, mapmyrun or even time her runs. So they ask her: "How much do you run?"
So she says: "not sure... must be almost 80 miles a week some weeks"
So they print "Shepherd runs about 80 miles per week".
Whatever she's doing, it seems to be working for her.
At this rate she takes down Paula's record in 2023, age 86!
