Brief info: Male, previous PR 15:18 5k from college (10 years ago) took off a few years, been running again for about 5 months.
Been building mileage steadily over the last few months (doubling 4-5 times a week with a long run and medium run on the weekend) averaging 60+ very consistently. At first, it was literally tough to run 8min miles for 4 miles (I'm talking tempo lol) and now I'm running 8-10mi at 7:20-7:40 fairly comfortably (high-aerobic range, but definitely not tempo). I also do tons of running in the 8-9+ range to help recover and keep the miles consistent.
Here's the question: As my goal pace for 5k this summer is 5:35/mi, I'm curious to if I should be concerned that sub-7 right now sends me straight to oxygen debt? I can run 7:30's for a while, but as soon as I go sub-7 I feel like I'm losing balance and am breathing really hard. It's not comfortable at all. What do you recommend at this point? Keep doing what I've been doing? Add more mileage at same paces? Decrease miles and increase paces? The one thing I don't want to do is be overaggressive and get hurt (again). Any serious replies will definitely be welcomed.
Thanks Malmo et al.
