Ask her to go for a walk. Make it relaxing and enjoyable and tell her that you want it to be a regular thing.

Eat healthy- I assume you're young. Check out the "when did you start feeling old" thread. Tell her how a bunch of old guys said that eating healthy and staying fit from a young age makes them feel young at an "old" age.

Fitness and nutrition have to become a shared way of life. Walks, hikes, runs on the beach/trails, bikes on trails, salads made together, new healthy recipes cooked together, etc. My hubby and I are 11 years strong. My weight is actually slightly lower than when we met. But it has been a major lifestyle commitment. Also she has to be into it or forget it. Joining a gym together also might help. But it's about exercise and nutrition, not just exercise. Exercise alone will not do it. Good luck.

Sacrifice some of your own workouts and walk, jog, or bike with her.

Do the grocery shopping. Buy healthy foods. Tell her it's because you want to eat healthier.

Cook with her or for her.

I agree, but I was thinking about this thread during my run today. I have friends who just don't care if they gain weight. I mean, they care, but aren't willing to do anything to change the situation.

That being said, I really believe that if you don't approach the issue from a critical standpoint (do not seriously do not tell her that she is overweight), but talk about things like your concern that you are gaining weight, your gaining a couple of pounds, your weighing yourself daily and whether you have gained a couple of pounds...form these habits and discussions as a couple. And really honestly focusing on reading about healthy eating, getting those types of magazines and books, etc.

When I met my husband I was an avid fitness person--former aerobics instructor, worked in college gym, but I wasn't that into running (I maybe ran 3 miles a day, 4 days a week). I met a marathon runner and the rest is history--now I'm more into running than he is. He had just finished Boston. He actually *complimented* the distance that I had run the day we met and the ultra slow 5K time that I completed before our first date. These little things fueled my fire and piqued my interest. You can get her into your lifestyle but needs to be through shared interest and enjoyment, along with compliments, not nagging her to lose weight.

The few pounds you are worrying about will seem trivial once your wife gets older and has a few kids…just keeping it real.

I don't want to sound negative and pessimistic, but the truth is, there is absolutely nothing you can do about this situation. It’s a conundrum; if do nothing and she becomes obese, she will ask why did you sit by and allow it to happen and if you say something, she will say you can’t accept her as she is. This is a fate many guys find themselves in and your only hope is she alone finds her back.

I am sure your wife has many great qualities that attracted you to her, which perhaps will never change and her changing physical stature is something you come to accept.

So true. My wife of 30 years has put on 18lbs since we married (of course, I've put on 45lbs, but let's not change the subject).

Whenever, I say anything about weight, she just breaks down in tears and screams,

"What's wrong with being 5'7" and 121lbs!"

You just can't win.

Seriously what works for me, but is somewhat expensive, is to plan beach vacation trips. So at least twice a year we were going to Hawaii.

The good thing with Facebook is that chicks like to blab about big things like a vacation and then follow up with pics.

So a few months before each trip, my wife becomes more consistent working out, eating right and keeping her weight down.

It also helps if you buy her a brand name (Victoria Secret) bikini beforehand. She'll definitely try it on and take a good look at herself and have an idea how much weight she needs to lose. If she asks you how she looks, LIE and say "beautiful as ever" somewhat sacrasticly. NEVER say she is fat, that's an instant "go to the doghouse". You can say "there is more of you to love".

The other plus side to this is you'll seem like such as "nice guy" for taking her on vacation (and buying her a new bikini). (And if you order through Victoria Secret, you'll get those catalogs with hot chicks coming in like every month).

Anyway, honestly depending on your relationship and the time you are willing to commit, I think it's easily possible to get your wife totally fit. Very specific plan:

Tell her that you want to get fit together or just want to spend more time doing something active/enjoyable where/when you can talk together more and still be getting fit.

Today--walk 3 miles with her.

Tomorrow--walk 4 miles with her.

Tues--walk 5 miles with her.

Or whatever variation to get the mileage up to 5, walking. Eventually increasing to 6-8 on some days would be awesome but not necessary. A bike ride later in the day would also be awesome, depending on where you live and the weather.

After she is thoroughly accustomed to walking, throw in a few jogs, like 1 min run, 2 walk. Just a little to increase HR. But always at least 5 miles a day, 6 days a week. *Eventually* but not in the beginning (maybe after 1 or a few months), hopefully you can run some while she walks on her own initiative (starting together). My husband used to be a faster runner, but we still started/stopped every run together, and met in the middle near whatever turn around.

After walk/run, get home, HELP her cut a salad, lots of veggies, or stir-fry lots of veggies that you chop together, then top with sauteed lean protein or fish. Measure salad dressing. Opt out of processed foods as a family. Get involved with grocery shopping with her. Tell her you want to make healthier food choices as a family--make it about you and weight you want to gain/lose if possible. Or race you want to perform well in...but primary thing is time together to talk while also being active--just enjoyable time together.

Honestly some of my best times with my husband were during long runs and bike rides together. This can be togetherness time that you will both really enjoy if you try. Long bike rides on trails are AWESOME for this purpose. Ditto with long runs or hikes.

PS- your wife would be upset about her own weight gain IF she was still attracted to you. Have you ever stopped to think maybe she doesn't care about her weight because she doesn't want to stimulate your advances?
