After that bridge, do you feel any of the others? Maybe the Queensboro bridge in 15 and 16 and 5th ave in 23 and 24. I'm running it in the fall and was wondering what you guys have made of it.
It's such a small race, I really doubt anyone here has done it.
The Verrazano does not take much out of you as it is the first mile. The downhill (second mile) can take more out of you. But the Queensboro bridge is tough and 5th ave. hurts.

Yeah, what comes up must come down. The Pulaski Skiway, which is essential the route from Brooklyn into Queens, is pretty steep.
By the way, the ad I saw on this page sure is interesting. Nice hacking job by somebody.
I agree with this. Since it is the first mile it isn't too bad. Just expect to go slow. Queensboro and 5th avenue were much tougher. Mentally and phsyically at that point.

go out easy for the first mile up the bridge, maybe thirty seconds or a bit less slower than goal pace, and then you'll pick most of that back on the descent. Do not go too hard on the descent but relax and pick it up easy. That second mile can tire you out. But for me the toughest sections are the Pulaski bridge at the halfway pt and the Queensboro bridge at about 15 miles. In mile 23 or so, you have the one mile up fifth avenue to 90th st where you enter the park, but that's pretty gradual. The hills do not stop in this race, so do some hill training to prepare.
That "gradual" one-mile uphill on 5th Ave (23rd mile) hurts more than all the bridges combined because it's on the wrong side of DA WALL. Thank god there are street signs on each corner so you can at least count down while you cry: 97th, 96th, 95th....
As for Verrazzano, you will be too busy weaving in and out of the crowds, trying to pick up some speed, to even notice the uphill. If you feel that uphill is getting tough, just stop for a moment to take a piss off the side of the bridge like everybody else.
Well, the fifth avenue hill doesn't bother me because I put in the high hobby jogger miles and I can taste the finish at that point so I run well, suffer a little bit more in the park, and then finish strong.

The Pulaski Skyway is in NJ.
You refer to the Pulaski Bridge.
the worst part about the first mile is weaving through people and the wind because you're out in the open.You don't notice the climb much at all.
I don't even remember the 5th Ave Hill.
Agree with everyone else: take the first two miles easy - both uphill and downhill, slowly ease into the race.
Queensborough Bridge feels much harder.
I don't recall the first mile being bad. Your legs are fresh, you're excited and ready to go. Like others, I found the bridge at halfway difficult, and that stretch up 5th Avenue was miserable. The ups and downs through Central Park were tough too. I walked away from that race more fatigued and sore than any other marathon I've done. I absolutely found it harder than Boston.
I ran mile 1 too hard and had to walk on the Queensboro.
I'd never walked in a marathon before.
