never fear. the typical letsrun armchair quarterbacks/know it alls will soon find something negative to say regarding this.

Strong run indeed! Not far off Germans 69 in hs

Try it again.
Yes, impressive run and win for a 17 year old.
Wow, nice work Eddie. There was a nice write up about him toward the end of xc season on the milesplit site. I believe he is headed to Princeton this fall.
Adrien Dannemiller (now at Cornell) ran 1:08 when he was in high school, though that was on a flat course in Indianapolis.
Eddie Owens of Packer Collegiate.

Armchair quarterback here. This is definitely a solid run but...the McMillan calculator lists this as being equivalent to 15:14 for 5k, 4:23.8 for the mile.
So why are we celebrating this caliber performance with a letsrun.com thread? Surely there are hundreds of low-15's and low-4:20's high school runners in the country. The guys who get threads made about them are usually low-14's and sub-4:10.
Finally, a smart High School runner who sees they aren't gonna achieve anything in Cross and that Road Racing is the big thing. And the Half is a perfect race for a High Schooler/ Collegiate to develop in and actually accomplish something.
So unless their Verzbicas, Rupp, Chelenga, or Chris Derrick than it's a smart idea to Road Race.
we are "celebrating it" because it is indicative to success in longer distances, akin to what Japanese high school runners focus on. He ran some serious hills completely alone and ran a fast time. Thats impressive. Go die.

^Maybe Because this kid is smart and actually realizes exactly what your saying and instead of being a pretty good Cross Country runner he can be a really good road racer. It's impressive because most athletes his age don't run halves that impressively, so when someone actually takes advantage of their talent it's impressive.
I'd say his accomplishment deserves a lot more discussion, praise and attention than the other high school xc thread currently making the rounds on letsrun about the "star" runner accused of armed robbery. Eddie sounds like a great kid to me - athletic, smart, motivated. What's not to like and praise?
it's a very hilly course, so you can take probably two minutes off the time to 68, and incidentally, I'm pretty sure that joe mac from the sub 5 mile thread ran 1:10 at brooklyn half a few years ago, while he was still at manhattan college.

ATTENTION: From this point forward, ALL Races will be cancelled..Please just time trial and plug it into the computer.
Works well for I-A Football.
Wow he beat JESUS.
I'm not anti-calculator, but I think we'd do well to remember that a 27 year old running 100 mile weeks for years running 1:10:25 is not the same as a 17 year old kid running 1:10:25. I'm guessing that someone still in high school isn't quite as aerobically developed as a hard-training post-collegian, and yet no running calculator is sophisticated enough to take into account varying levels of training "maturity" so to speak. 1:10:25 might only be "worth" about 4:24 in a well-trained, mature athlete, but I'd hazard a guess that Owens has more in the tank than what the calculator suggests.
I ran 4:20 for 1600 when I was 16, and there's no way I could have touched 5:22s for a half-marathon at 17. A 17 year old who can hammer like is impressive. I think this Owens kid has a lot of promise, and I wish him the best.
