And did he ever reveal his training? Is it true he was doing singles?

he's hiding in the cupboard under the stairs.
16 Nov 2003 - Latest news is that Morceli is going to the US to do winter training for the Olympics (5000 or 10000). Morceli did not race at all last year even though he said he would run in the World Champs in Paris. (Thanks to H. Laroussi)
16 Jul 2003 - the Algerian National Championships passed this weekend without Morceli's presence. It is unclear if he will participate in the World Champs in Paris in late August since he has not competed (and thus not achieved a qualifying mark) yet this season. (Thanks to H. Laroussi)
1 May 2003 - Delayed news: Morceli was supposed to compete in the Algerian National Cross Country Championships on March 7 in Algiers but did not. Thanks to H. Laroussi for the information.
11 Jan 2003 - Morceli talks about moving up in distance to the 5000 and 10000 and aiming for the World Champs in Paris this year. His interview is in the Algerian newspaper Le Matin here, but it is in French. Go here for a rough translated version. (Thanks to Carole Fuchs for the link..check out her site: Africa's Athletics)
Dec 2002 - At the IAAF awards gala, Morceli announces he will move up to the 10,000m and marathon for 2003. Read more here. (Thanks to Carole Fuchs for the link)

That's the latest news I know of, maybe you can contact the guy on the site for info
No wonder he didn't reveal his training. He was planning to compete again. Sounds like he had some injuries from the article I read on the link there. (Thanks for the link.)
It's sad to see he didn't make it. Kind of strange he'd prepare in three different countries. Who else trains in three different countries to prepare themselves?
I just read he ran 3:50 at the age of 16. I give up!!!
That's 30.66 per 200m the whole way. Gulp!
Morceli, then El G, then who is next? Right now I don't see anybody and El G is still as dominant. Baala and Lagat aren't that young and I dont' think Korir or Heshko can dominate. It's El G for more years to go :D
Alan Webb...no no wait...Steve Magness...no even better...JASON FUCKING REXING!!!!!!! Thats who's gonna follow up el G
I really doubt we will see Morceli racing this year or any other year. Every year since 2000 there have been press releases and interviews about him coming back but they never materialize, the last decade just really took it out of his body and he is really injury prone.
As for his training, he did do doubles, but it really depended on the period. And his doubles weren't that taxing, maybe 6M in the morning and 6M in the evening on easy days at a jog as it got close to the racing season to begin. The real focus was on workouts and speed more than anything. You run sick workouts and then the easy days are just to recover and keep the legs loose before the next one.
He also had rabbits in his workouts, usually his brother Ali Morceli who was responsible for rabitting some of his WR races. It doesn't surprise me to read that ElG has a bunch of workout pacers as well...

That surel, but is fast for a 16-year old, but a few Americans have gone that fast at the same age (or younger).
el cant dominate for more than 1-2 more years. how fast did he run at alex kipchirchirs age? what about at cornelius chirchirs age?
Both the Chirchirs looks good to take over from the King. There seems to be an abundance of young Kenyans showing potential. Singok can't be more than 20 either. Then theres always the great white hope, Willis. I don't know if Nick can get his 50.8 last laps down to match the 49.6's Morcelli used to pull out.

Sorry for the garbled diction there. Damn touch pads!
What ever happened to Hassiba Boulmerka?

I don't see anyone who seems prepared to take over the event for a number of years as Morceli did and El G has done. Kenyans, for the most part, don't hang around at the top all that long.
I used to live in Albuquerque, NM where Morceli trained at least part of the year. I saw him doing intervals on UNM's track once and he did have a whole entourage with him. I seem to remember him doing a bunch of 400s around 55-56 seconds a piece with very little rest between (less than a minute maybe). He had several guys pacing him taking turns for each interval. I was sitting in the stands with a friend of mine watching (I timed a couple of the intervals which is how I knew how fast they were), and when he was done he came over a talked to us for a couple of minutes, asked if we were milers etc. I'm glad he finally got his Olympic gold, hopefully this summer will be El Guerrouj's year.
How old is Morceli?

isnt that the person who works at the quickie mart on the simpsons?
Similar to my training haha, he went real hard in workouts and real easy on the easy days, works for us. Although I am very slow!! I still see El G dominating through 2006 or longer. I see Cornelius Chirchir more of a threat than Alex Kipchirchir, but I don't see any Kenyans who seem able to take the lead. Morceli was born on 28 February 1970
Morceli never closed any races in 49.6....most of his fast finishes were 50-52 sec
91 WC 1500 3:32 last lap of 51.54
92 Oly 1500 3:41 last lap of 51
93 WC 1500 3:34 last lap of 50.6
94 Zurich 5000 13:03.85 last lap of 52.2
95 WC 1500 3:33 last lap of 51
96 Oly 1500 3:35 last lap of 53, last 800 in 1:48
morceli's quote after the 91 WCs:
"aouita has beeb the athlete of the eighties, i will be that of the nineties."
close between him and el g.
morceli: 3 WC gold, 1 oly gold.
el g: 2 WC gold, WR, long unbeaten streak.
