I have this problem. I run at 5 am when everyone is sleeping because if I run any time my wife or my 3 kids are awake, she gets extremely pissed because

"All you care about is your running, and you leave me all the work in the house while you are running, and you rather spend time running than with the kids... blah blah blah..."

If I go out on a Sunday morning for a long run far from home and come back say at 10 am, when they are awake, she would be wanting to do house work all day long, just to make me look bad and bitch at me if I want to lay down after running a 20 miler. ON the other hand, I'm 100% sure that if that Sunday I didn't go run, she would probably be watching movies all day.

I'm married and my husband is happy that I run. It keeps me fit and, more importantly, sane. Since you work full time and take care of your kid, I don't see the problem with your running.

Could it be something else? Maybe your wife is feeling neglected and unappreciated. Talk to her more, say nice things, have a date with her once in a while. Fyi, I always feel like my husband doesn't talk to me enough.

I think this is kind of common. The best method of avoiding the stress is to try to get the running in at times that have the least conflict (such as, as recommended by another, very early in the morning). I had a similar situation for several years and it didn't improve until my wife began running. The running helped her to lose some of her feelings of stress and just helped her to be more accomodating of my running (and she looks better now too).

Does she know that you're frustrated and at your wits end?

Apparently, I race way too much.

It is not a problem for me because I would never have married a woman that this would be a problem for. I wouldn't even date women for very long if they had a problem with my running, much less marry them.

With that said, my wife and I both run, but we are respectful of each other. When my kids were younger, my running suffered, but that was my choice. I can understand how a spouse would be upset if your running was causing you to neglect doing your share of the household duties or spending less time with the family. To me running is still very important to me, but my wife and family are more important and we make it work. If your running hasn't suffered somewhat because of having kids, then something is probably wrong, unless you have a very flexible job or are a professional runner.

My wife nags me if I do not run--she knows I need it for my mental health as well as my physical health.

Who takes care of the toddler when you run? If she does, then in some ways it is a burden on her.

Running is healthy and when you're 50 your wife will be happy that you are healthy and in shape. You could be hanging out in bars, drinking, getting fat and have ED at 45. Instead you are involved in a healthy activity.

My wife does not appreciate me now (at 50+), she did 10,15, 20 years ago. Now, she is driving me to the young girls who hit on me.

Which, by a natural and easy transition, reminds me: what's the deal with people's* adding extra syllables to words, to make them really intense or something? I'm getting plenty tired of seeing/hearing things like "penultimate" (to mean "really, really the ultimate"--which it doesn't) and "malingering" (to mean "really, really hanging around you should just leave"--which it doesn't).

I'm female and my husband likes that I run and stay slim. He hates fat chicks, which is a plus.

I have to agree with the above poster. I can't even imagine trying to tell my husband that he couldn't take the dog for long walks or go out with friends when he wanted. Seriously, he'd be like "Um. No." and I respect him for it because he is happy and he wants me to be happy.

For the OP, do what you think is reasonable or else you will seriously resent your wife. She already resents you, but that is actually her problem. She isn't happy or in shape and wants you to be the same. Who knows, maybe if you stick to your guns and continue to offer her help and offer to create opportunities for her to have some time for herself, who knows... maybe she will become happier and become more supportive of your running.

I tell my wife, who is 10'years younger than me, that I run so I can be with her longer (ie have a longer lifespan). I am middle aged and many of many wive's friends make obvious flirtations in my general direction. Their husbands are fat and pot bellied and I'm fit and trim. My wive's proud to be seen with me. There are a few tri-guys in our circle of friends and I consistenly beat them in local turkey trots. The always ask me for running advise and their wives are always checking me out. Running is good to me. Best comeback is " I was running whe we met and you liked it, you knew what you were getting into". Works every time
