I'm a highschool track runner who since xc this year has been limping around with constant shin splints. ive had shin splints since freshman year but after my sophomore year they basically went away (i didnt do track freshman year and didnt do xc soph year, track went well soph year up until spring where i finally got a stress fracture.) ive had my fair share of injuries but the shins splints have been going on forever and have been coming back since xc this year (my senior year)
i really wanted this to be the year where i finally blew every1 away, i had a breakthrough intraining last year during spring track and went from being the kid who "might" be able to contend for a sixth place medal finish at the conference meet and maybe getting a state qualifyin mark to the kid who became the main threat to contend for the title and could qualify in anything 600m or up all in one season. but now im back on the injured list, had a terrible xc season (at least in terms of expectations) and now im on the bike at school for my training and only really let my feet touch ground on meet days. i dont want to be seen as the kid who had a fluke season because i know i didnt
i had upped my mielage from about 25-30 a week last spring track to over 55-60 a week over the summer before xc. i amped up slowly, doing 5 miles a week at a time then doubling back to adapt, and got into great shape. i then became anemic though because while i was running 50 a week (when everything started) i was working 30-35 hours a week and not eating (i know, bad idea). finnaly by the time xc started i was hit with the anemia and my shins weakened as a result. during the season my mileage went down to 30 or less due to the shin pains until i was finally put into the pool/on the bike.
ive pretty much recovered from the anemia but i think because of it my metabolism slowd down a bit, that and im still not running nearly as much as i used to even from last spring. but my shins still havent recovered fully. i took time off between seasons and thought that did the trick but i was again sidelined soon after and now its incredibly bad for a few days, will feel fine in the next few and ill try to run again like 20-30 minutes continously after already having been walk jogging (4x1) only to be sidlined AGAIN.
i need help! anyone know what might be happening? is it because im not sleeping enough or still not eating enough? i just fnished the college application process so maybe im still stressed from that? if its any help, my right calf is noticeble bigger than my left one (not a ton but you can see it if you look closely)and my left leg is almost a full inch longer than my right. the pain is mostly in the right tho, but will occasionally become the left one.
ive gotten back into pretty much the same shape as last spring where i was doing well, or i have at least almost all my old speed back. i just cant train endurance wise though as efficiently which has effected my main race (the mile). and yes i have been getting new shoes when needed, tried doing barefoot, tried minimalist shoes (which worked great during the summer)and have been going to PT constantly. HELP!!!
