"Vin Lananna, has produced charismatic young U.S. distance stars like half-miler Andrew Wheatley."
Wheatly...lol
I lost respect for the article as soon as I saw the bit about "pinning a schizophrenic’s murderous spree on the Tea Party is little more than a tribal chant." The author sounds like a schizophrenic himself with his obsession about "tribal chants."
Goddamnit. Not an ounce of professionalism shown here. Is it that hard to get Wheating's name right? Why do these buffoons even bother writing these stories when they can't be troubled to actually verify the accuracy of the simplest facts?
What a terrible column! Bad analogy. Not in any way interesting, revealing, or informative. Pointless.
suppression of key evidence is a crucial flaw in biased columns, and this one is no exception. aside from that idiotic comment denying Tea Party complicity in its violent, revolutionary rhetoric and imagery, wouldn't it have been relevant to refer to Vin's national championships, all Americans, and national title holders, both in distance and multis AT OREGON, as well as earlier, so that we would have a proper comparison. Smith brought no national titles to Oregon.
also, it's odd that there was no account of Rupp's role in the whole thing, as he is Vin's most decorated athlete to this point and his unwillingness to come to Oregon with Smith at the helm was, as I recall, the last straw for Oregon, that is to say, for Phil Knight, leading to Smith's firing.
While he refused to come when Smith was at the helm he was hardly Vin's athlete. He trained with Salazar while at the O.
Smith had balls to say you aren't going to run for us if your not my athlete. Vin is a pleaser and he allowed the charade to go on. Also much of the track teams building occured under Smith. Vin's national championships are a culmination of what Smith had started at Oregon.
Vin is a "pleaser"??? Now THAT is newsworthy!
So exactly how many of Smith's recruits scored for the NCAA Championships?
yes, everyone knows that Salazar was training Rupp, but that didn't mean that Rupp wasn't a member of Vin's team, so he was Vin's most decorated athlete.
which of these guys on Oregon's 2007 and 2008 XC champions was recruited by Smith? Certainly not Rupp, Wheating, Puskedra, Klotz, Kiptoo, Centro, and possibly not the Mercados.

Yes Vin is a pleaser.
While Martin may not have directly recruited any of the athletes who scored points on the track, he did build the program to a point that it was reputable and able to recruit nationally. You don't win a national championship overnight and you don't win one thru good coaching. You win it thru good recruiting and a reputation. That is fact. The greatest coach in the world would not have a chance in hell at winning without talent.
Vin wants everyone to think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread but he is not. He has lucked his way into many prestigious jobs.

I dont understand people with their need to pin opinions to conservatives and liberals. The hatred is absurd.
we are all now dumber for having read that article. what was the point of this? it seemed like he was going to get into a detailed comparison and actually talk about something, but then it just ended.
No way can Vin claim Rupp as his. What a JOKE. Rupp ran for Oregon and was coached by someone on Nike's payroll...Rupp himself was actually on Nike's payroll before he started at Oregon, but that's another story. So let's put that to rest real fast. Again I don't agree with everything Martin does or did but standing up to Nike and Phil Knight on the Rupp deal was the right thing to do. In the end it cost him his job but at least he's not a puppet of Knight like the rest of the coaching staff at Oregon including the Football coach. In order to be able to deal with Phil you have to be a pleaser and a yes man which Martin is NOT:-) When Martin left Wisconsin Oregon was in the dumps. I ran for Martin at Wisconsin and trust me, the least of our worries was Oregon during that time. He starting building a track team at Oregon when the alumni and Knight wanted him to put all his resources into distance runners...again another reason he was fired.
