I recently returned a few unwanted X-Mas gifts without a receipt. Both stores needed to see my drivers license to give me an in store credit. Can anyone explain what they do with the DL# - do they track returns, share the info with other stores????

They are probably just checking to put a little scare in you in case you are a scammer. I used to check IDs once in a while, and my suspicions paid off more than once - a very fishy guy who looked like he stole the product from someone basically bailed out the front door (he had asked for a cash refund, something we almost never did).
The grift they suspecting: a person steals something (hence the lack of receipt), and return it to the same store hoping for a cash return (or at least a trade for something thats fits better!).
I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you do the same thing over and over again, they really don't care.
I tried returning a MP3 player unopened without a receipt and was told there is a 15 day return policy on MP3 players and a receipt is also required! Looks like I may have to try e-bay to get rid of it! Or should I try a different Walmart?
I don't shop in stores like Wal-Mart, but I totally f***ed over this one haberdashery one time. I broke in and stole a bunch of merchandise one night, but did it without them knowing (girl I knew worked there and I stole her key). It was a fairly large stock, so they wouldn't have realized things were missing without actually doing a complete inventory.
I probably took over $5,000 worth of merchandise.
A few weeks later I returned to the store with just over $1,500 worth of what I stole and claimed I was returning gifts. They thought something was fishy but gave me the cash.
...about the key.
Some friends and i were riding in this girls car, and when she went into the gas station to buy a coke, I took the key off of her keyring while they were in the ignition.
A few days later I just threw it on the floor in her car so she would think she just lost/found it.

Hit up another Wally World in your area. If it's unopened you should get a refund, but maybe only for the lowest recent sale price if you don't have a receipt.
