How does it work when you work for an athletic shoe company? Are you expected to always wear the company brand of shoes and clothes, or at least not display the arch rival brand? (For Nike, perhaps Adidas.)
I've heard of Microsoft employees getting grief for their iPods and iPhones, though by now I imagine that battle has been lost.
as a former nike employee, i can promise you that would be one of the biggest mistakes you could ever make. people that work there are complete fanatics. one guy even had a tattoo of a swoosh on the side of his head. ludicrous.

Gotta agree with Haystack, this would be a really bad idea.
I've worked for both adidas and Nike and can tell you that wearing competitors shoes or apparell is a big no/no. I believe that Nike security will actually escort you of their campus if you wear anything but the swoosh. I saw a guy at adidas told to take his Nike watch off.
My dad left one of the tire companies to go work at GM. First day of work he pulls into the parking lot in his Ford ... and it was the only non-GM in the lot.
He sold it that night and bought a Chevy. He said it was a very bad first day of work even for a white-collar worker.
Most companies have major discount programs. I bet Nike employees get huge discounts if not an allotment of free stuff.
No excuse for not supporting your company.
My dad has been retired for about 20 years and he still gets General Motors discounts and as his child, I can use it, too. His discount saves me about 20 percent off sticker on new vehicles.
You would never ask this question if you ever took one step on the Nike campus. If you worked there and wore another brand, it would probably be the last day you worked there.

Be slightly more intelligent than this and support your employer.

I worked at a smaller running brand and we had a new hire that walked in on his first day with a pair of NIKE Air Force One's... the company didn't even manufacture basketball/casual shoes at the time, but you can imagine a poor first step forward regardles... and he has yet to be promoted, etc.
I wasn't allowed to wear anything but Nike at the USA championships. No joke.

So what do Nike and Adidas employees wear to work if they want to look professional? Are suits off limits? Must be weird hold a meeting with a bunch of businessmen who are dressed like they are waiting for coach to put them in the game or like they are in the middle of a round of golf.
No kidding. I doubt many of the posters on this thread have ever been on the Nike campus, much less worked for Nike.
Having worked at world HQ of both adidas and Puma and now employed by Nike....
The worst thing you can do is wear a RIVAL brands products.
To look smart is not rocket science. None branded Gap, H&M and countless other brands are fine.
At first it is weird sitting in meetings with suppliers, key accounts etc wearing t-shirt and shorts while guys across the table are suited and booted. It's the DNA of the company though. They understand that it's a sports company.
On reason I chose to work for these brands because although i might sit in an office it feels far from an office job.
I've not seen a colleague wear a suit ever. It's kinda cool.

I work at the HQ of a major steakhouse. I'm a vegetarian. And everyone there knows it. When we go out to eat or have food delivered I eat vegetarian items. It's not that big of a deal...

Well then, I guess I should cross Nike off my list of potential employers once my book on barefoot running is published.
To answer a previous question, Nike has an employee store where all new line clothes/shoes are at least 40% off.

If I was a product development guy, I would probably have some of the most knowledgeble and experienced runners wearing and running in the competition and giving me feedback. Although maybe not wearing them to work.

I fully get company spirit. But along the lines of what you're saying, a culture where (judging from these reports) employees are cowed into toeing the company line, or only those who willingly toe the company line remain, does not sound like a culture of innovation. Or integrity.

I was able to get into the Nike employee store about 3 years ago and, at the time, they had Cole Haan dress shoes for sale (deeply discounted...40% as previous poster said sounds accurate), as I think Nike owns part/all of them.
