Is running for an Ivy League school as a grad student legal, say if you graduated from your school, got released, and went to an ivy with one year of eligibility left due to redshirt. I have heard both yes and no to this question.

No. Ivies do not allow you to run once you have graduated as an undergrad. I believe there is an appeal process, but only if you attended the same Ivy as an undergrad.
Before anyone tries to say otherwise, former coach is correct. Actually, under no circumstances can one compete as a grad student for an Ivy. Not even if you graduate in less than four years at an Ivy and begin graduate work early. They are very strict about this.
wasn't there some Cornell football player this past year or the year before who tried to get a 5th year of eligibility because of an injury and had graduated within 4 years, but was denied the opportunity even though he would have been or was in grad school?
It's possible about the football player. I graduated from Cornell a few years ago, and I had a teammate who had the opportunity to graduate a semester early and begin a Masters program in the spring semester. However, the league denied his request to compete as a grad student even though it would still have been in his 4th year at school. I also personally inquired into competing a 5th year as a grad student but was told that it is not allowed even though I had a full year of eligibility.
I believe that the only way you can compete for an Ivy in a fifth year is if you have a redshirt and you are still an undergrad in the fifth year. So, that would mean taking a year off, or delaying graduation by staying in school for 5 years.
