Back in the 1970's Hammond High in Indiana had 3 guys run sub-9 for 2 miles.
Chapa, Keough and Pinkowski 8:51.0, 8:52.8 and 8:56.2 = 23:39
Which high school has the next best top 3 for 2M/3200?

The next best, or better?
fyi those times add up to 26:40.0

Woah, I never thought about it, but a relay of the top 3 High School two milers in the country would get lapped by Bekele.
Perspective...

Err... why only three legs? Or were you just trying to pimp Hammond? Where's your anchor?
Be hard to beat some of those Mead teams with the Davis twins, et al...
Rockford '98 would've had a squad, too - Ritz 8:40, Hartmann 8:55, several 9:10-9:20 types.
York (Sage and crew) would be right in the mix, too.
I think because they all were on the same team and were sub 9 in the same season.

Ritz was only 8:58 while Hartmann was there.
why only 3?
i dunno. I was running high school myself when Hammond ran those times and blew my mind.
I just wonder if any young whippersnappers have done better since
Rockford 98 times = 23:45 and were for 3200?.
any specific times for Mead?

uhhm... Rockford's 1998 times were definitely not 23:45 ... that would be a 7:55 average...
I'd take Mead's 1993-1994 team out of consideration. Matt Davis was injured, so he didn't really help much... but Mead did sweep the top 3 at state:
3200 meters
1 Rob Aubrey, Mead 9:07.85 (SB)
2 Micah Davis, Mead 9:07.90 (??)
3 Skiy Detray, Mead 9:11.56 (9:06.0 SB)
Mead '95 was probably better in this conversation, with both Micah Davis and Skiy DeTray under 9. Not sure how fast their #3 was that year, though... probably under 9:20, but not sure how much (probably 9:10-9:15 I'd guess).
oops again
Rockford 1998 26:45 but someone disputed Ritz not at 8:40 in the same year
Mead 93-94 = 27:28
Well West Windsor Plainsboro North starts off with
Joe Rosa - 8:44.06(2m)
Jim Rosa - 8:51.46(2m)
Don't forget about the 1986 Jesuit team that had Eric & Mark Mastalir & junior Paul Thomas. Eric & Mark ran 8:44 & 8:51 that year, and I believe Paul went under 9:10, but the best I can find is a 9:16 at the state meet.
Thomas was 9:07.11 at the same race (Arcadia 1986) where the Mastalirs ran their times.

Yes sir, I think that's the #3 team.
Anyone have a complete sub-27:30 list for 3x3200m SBs?
Based on what I've got...
1. Hammond IN 1975 = 26:30.8c
Chapa 8:51.0y -> 8:47.9c
Keough 8:52.8y -> 8:49.7c
Pinkowski 8:56.38y -> 8:53.2c
2. West Windsor-Plainsboro North NJ 2010 = 26:45.68
Joe Rosa 8:44.06y -> 8:41.0c
Jim Rosa 8:51.46y -> 8:48.3c
Squeri 9:16.38
3. Jesuit CA 1986 = 26:53.64
Eric Malistar 8:44.95
Mark Malistar 8:51.99
Paul Thomas 9:16.70
4. York IL 2000 = 27:09.19
Sage 8:42.89
Palumbo 9:11.20
Cioni 9:12.10
5. The Woodlands TX 2004 = 27:18.28
Sullivan 8:52.92
Gerber 9:10.36
Jones 9:15.0
6. Mead WA 1994 = 27:21.75
DeTray 9:06.0
Aubrey 9:07.85
Micah Davis 9:07.90
7. York IL 2009 = 27:27.74

9. Mead WA 2003 = 27:28.85

Garber 9:07.68
Barnes 9:13.89
...
Rockford MI '99 ran 9:01.79y (Ritz) and 9:01.60 (Hartmann), but I have no idea what their #3 ran... Michigan's all-time lists only go back to 9:13ish, from what I've seen and their #3 didn't make it to state and wasn't included in Dyestat's rankings (which went back to 9:18 or 9:20 back then IIRC), though of course it's possible a mark got missed somewhere.
Mead WA '95 and Lompoc CA '73 I still don't know either, beyond their pairs of sub-9 guys.
Not quite on the same level thru 3, but incredible depth...
Neuqua Valley 2008 had the following times for 3200, if I recall:
Derrick 8:48 (altho he also closed his 5k in 8:48, most likely coulda gone faster)
Riddle 9:11
Pawola 9:16
also:
Beattie 9:25
and, I believe 2 more under 9:35...Winek, and someone else. could be wrong.
also had a couple strong guys over shorter distances like Josh Budnik, who i think ran 1:55ish
Pretty incredible team. NXN champs. I got killed by them constantly haha

Ah, how could I forget them! I keep touting them as one of the 5 best XC teams ever, yet I didn't even think to check their track marks when coming up with this quick list...
Anyone else missing?

That's pretty amazing. One one team, you have guys who ended up qualifying for all sorts of national meets and having crazy high school PBs.
Derrick- 8:48/13:55/13:52 at Detweiller, 1st at NXN, 2nd at FLN. His collegiate career at Stanford is obviously well-documented.
Riddle- 6th at NXN that year after being out for almost the entire season. Finished well back in the pack at the state meet, which was his first race back, and collapsed multiple times. In my opinion, he was a 9:05 type guy if he only could've stayed healthy his senior year. His injury problems have continued in college, but he was 17th at the Midwest XC Regional this year, running for the University of Illinois.
Pawola- was a junior in 2008 but qualified for Footlocker Nationals, where he finished 13th, as a senior. Career best in the 9:07-08 range at 3200, I believe. Ran sub 9:20 as a soph, as well. Now runs varsity at Penn State.
Beattie- ran 9:25 that year as a soph, then was injured for jr xc season. Got down to 9:09ish as a senior, including finishing 11th/12th-ish at FLMW, and also quite high at NXN. Now runs at Washington, redshirted this xc season.
and that's just the top 4...
Winek ended up getting worse the next year but did run 9:33ish as a senior and ran at Illinois State University, I believe (??)
Budnik split 1:55ish
Verbus was a strong 3200 guy, sub 9:40, I believe
Crazy shit.
I'm not sure of the times, but don't forget the Woodlands teams from the mid 80's. Eric Henry, Daniel Green, Shawn Barnes, Darrell Smith, etc. Henry was a senior in 1987 & Green was a junior.
Anyone know the South Eugene OR guys times from the 70's?
I only know what info is posted on the 'US HS Distance Gods' page and the OSAA State meet archives... I would imagine their 1976 team (Bill McChesney, John Gustafson, Seth Brown, et al) would be pretty far up any list...
