Its very hard to imagine Pre running a marathon. Maybe I'm off base on this but at heart Pre was a middle distance runner. 5000M was a big step up in distance as it was for him. I think he would have maxed out at the 10K in distance before retiring had he lived.

He'd have went balls out and collapsed around mile 10 after going through the 10k in 27:40.
I love going off PRS though as if 5 and 10k have any correlation to marathons.

Alberto Salazar didn't even break 13:30 or 27:30 and ran a decent marathon too I believe but I sure some knowledge math dependent jackass will come on and call me a moron a couple times and show me a calculator that says he was in sub 13 shape when he did the marathons.
He had problems with sciatica and other injuries that were common back then because they didn't really have orthotics and shoes like we have today. I think he would have gotten injured.
salazar ran
13:11 for 5k
27:25 for 10k
I believe Salazar had the AR in all three events.
he'd have been the toughest son of a bitch to ever go 26.2
sub 2:10
read the book, people!
2:18
Too foolish
You may be right but that's not cuz of shoes
A better question is "What could Kenenisa Bekele run a marathon in?" because he's alive and the best track and xc runner of all time.
The answer is he'll never run one. That's my gut feeling.
I reckon he would have made it further than Jerry
He did, plus the AR for 5K indoors and the 10K on the road.
2:10-2:12
Pre did run a marathon, a couple weeks after his Olympic Gold Medal in the 5k. He ran with Shorter and outkicked him in the last mile to run 2:11:35.
Why is it that only people in Oregon seem to know anything about Pre. Hello, the book and movies were entertainment. Do some research sometime.
There is a lot more to Pre than Fire on the Track and Without Limits[./i]
I know there's that big argument about shoes and all but:
I am the same size and weight as Pre was. I had similar injury problems. I made it past my 24th birthday and when shoes started to have more support my constant injuries stopped. My sciatica went away. I no longer get "overuse" injuries.
For me the right shoes have kept me running for 39 years.
and runn, what shoes are the "right shoes" you're referring to? Pre actually never got any serious injuries you should really look into it and do your research before you come to these conclusions
Pre had neither the running style nor (more important)the psyche/personality to be a top marathoner. He also didn't really have the speed for world-beating 5K. Personally I really regret we never saw him do Bedford-like attacks on the 10K. I think that was his distance.
The Pre SubTwo Marathon Shoe/
Shirley he would have gone sub 2 hours without that pesky boulder sticking out on the course.
Bet he would have gone under 2:10- in the Beer Marathon-26 miles 26 Beers- too!
