Does showering after runs aid at all in the recovery process?
Does showering after runs aid at all in the recovery process?
Good question
I heard it was bad for your muscles taking a hot shower immediately after a run. I don't know if this is true or not, but I haven't showered in years.
I dunno but it is a great opportunity to wash your running clothes and keep Mom happy.
...and you guys wonder why you have problems getting dates...sheesh.
I shower every day after I run. Usually I grab a snack first. Anyways I will say it is at least neutral in terms of healing effect.
Good sleep and healthy food are the most important keys to recovery. People who sleep 8+ hours every night (beginning at a consistent time) and eating a good runners diet (with plenty of water) will be able to recover from just about anything. Some elites even take naps during the day to improve recovery.
Don't shower. It's bad for you and what the sheep want you to do.
What has worked for me is to eat some complex carbs and about 10 grams of protein with plenty of water within 10 minutes of finishing a run (hardboiled eggs and a bagel are my favorite). Then I lie on the floor and elevate my legs on the ottoman for about 15 minutes. Rarely do I have time for all this but it does speed my recovery. A hot shower after a hard workout gives you the opposite therapy of an ice bath.
I always have very hot baths after long runs. Not because I have any idea if it is the right thing to do but because it feels so good.
Jump into an ice bath if you like but not for me.
I sleep 10 hours a day and that to me is the most important
thing as regards recovery and dealing with high mileage.

Agreed, a hot shower, especially after a run when it's snowing with 20-30 mph winds. Or a cold one after running in the heat and humidity.
