What's the purpose of blasting music so loud others(who may not like the song)can hear it too?
2 COMMON INSTANCES
1. blasting it from a motorized vehicle to the point it's heard from sidewalks.
2. blasting it from a dorm room and leaving it playing all day even when no one's in the room.

Gosh, there's nobody I hate more than loud people.
So people can know just how cool you really are.
It's not enough to like music. In fact it's not even required that you DO like the music. It's just required that you let everone know that you are listening to it.

i can almost understand blasting it from a vehicle as it might be for "street cred" and/or to let everyone know you're making an entrrance.
but to do it in a room, leave it on in your room (as in a dorm room or apartment room) and not even be present in the room (empty room) is just complete douchebaggery.
People that blast music from cars are obnoxious mental midgets. They do it because they can and they like to be noticed.
It's even worse when it's some dude blasting music that is from the mid 80's. Something like Whitesnake or Journey.
It sounds better loud in a car. Think about your favorite band playing music quietly at a concert or blasting it. Which would you find more appealing?
It is also a way to attract attention from a bystander. You're blasting Ratatat you stop at a stoplight. A girl hears and sees you playing it. She smiles. You smile. You decide you want some coffee. You pull over and go into the coffee shop. She is in there. She mentions she heard you playing Ratatat. You strike up a conversation. 2 months later youre dating. 1 year later your engaged. 5 years later you're married w one in the oven. All because you were blasting music 6 years and 2 months ago.
I blast music btw in my car. The latter example provided might be common with being a young age and misplaced priorities such as not being cognissant of the fact you're wasting electricity. Or maybe they want someone to believe they're in their room.
In the end what does it all matter? Were all just cogs in the machine.
