I am going to say you are more pathetic. Someone who runs 14's has obviously put some effort into it, just not enough. Then on top of that, you used your mediocre talent to win "local races" when you know local races have zero competition. That is pathetic. I would rather be a guy who runs 17's for fun.

Some race to be as fast as they can be NOW. Right NOW. Not last year or next year. Right now. And pretty much we all fall into one of 2 camps: 1) Quit when you start slowing down (the majority) or 2) keep racing to find out how fast you can be TODAY. You have taken the first path so what exactly is the big deal? Just quit! Or are you trying to justify that it is okay to quit?

I don't understand where you can get this idea that 5:30 min/mi looks mentally retarded as that pace is almost good enough to make the Mens Olympic Trials in the Marathon. 5:30 min/mi comes out to 2:24:12 for marathon. Yes, the 17min guy is only running that pace for a 3.125miles, so if you view them running that pace in a snapshot, how exactly do they LOOK retarded to you? please explain.

17 minutes isn't horrible as if you can run 17minutes you can still beat 99% of people at most road races. It is a good time for competitive women.

What would you tell a promising HS kid who runs 17min for 5K and has a shot at low 16s next fall? he looks mentally retarded?

It's simply a matter of perception. I assume that a "14 mid" guy appears to be as "developmentally disabled" in the eyes of a 12 High guy as a 17 appears to a 14 guy.

Who cares what someone looks like when they are running?

If someone still enjoys the act of running and still enjoys the effort of training, they will still compete. It's a pretty simple sport.

I don't think the people accusing you of trolling are overly sensitive here. If we define "trolling" as a post that's primarily seeking to stir up controversey you've got one. It's the way you present your idea here.

No one would care if you simply asid that you've slowed to the point where you find racing unsatisfying and a bit embarassing and were giving it up and left it at that.

Instead, you move on to insult anyone who doesn't see it your way. It seems arrogant, condescending, and given that your best performances were certainly decent but nothing at all special, unjustifyably big headed. It does create some questions about how "legitimate" a poster you are.

How about this... Instead of racing, go volunteer at a school for mentally or physically challenged kids. Go do it once.

Most do not believe in a heaven or hell, but if there is a hell, I believe it is full of people who ridicule the mentally and physically challenged.

I am 31, make $230 grand a year as a surgeon, have a beautiful wife and still managed to run 2:28 for the marathon, 30:42 for the 10k and 15:02 for a road 5k.

See the atmosphere you were in lead you to believe that you didn't look funny while running. If I enter races were 17 mins wins then I am a baller. If I enter a races were the top times are mid 13s then I look like a slow guy who should give up running races. Look I know you have given up on running but don't give up on that two story card board box house you have been saving for.
