Did the "Oregon Plan" ruin their chances of a top 3 finish?

I saw a interview with Oregon's assistant coach saying Oregon always goes out aggresivly, it is the wat Vin coaches.

If that was their plan on that course and in those conditions(windy), maybe it explains why some(AJ and 2 DNFs) did so poorly and others (Luke and Centro) did well.

It seems to be an all or nothing plan unlike OSU. Is that the best way to coach a "team" or have "individuals" do well?

Luke Puskedra- A++ great performance

Matt Centrowitz- A solid job for not being a 10k guy

Daniel Mercado- B- should be up with Centro

Parker Stinson- B should be able to finish higher

AJ Acosta- F performed below his ability or expectations

Ben Dejarnette- F DNF no excuse or it better be a good one!

Brian Shrader- F DNF (see Above)

Seems like the plan destroyed the teams chances.

Thoughts?

Vin only raced five guys.

He had his Stanford teams push the early going- generally seemed to work for them.

No way Danny is ever up with Centro.

A.J. probably overraced this season on a thin base.

Yes Danny may not belong there now, but as a senior with all that training, he should have been able to run much better than that.

Yeah I just saw that- other threads were claiming only 5 guys B.S.

Danny could have run better, but no better than 25th-30th or so based on ability. They just don't have the depth at Nationals, period.

Oregon's problem was lack of depth and having a squad with too many middle distance guys (Shrader, DeJarnette, Centro and A.J.) The three inexperienced freshmen (Shrader, Stinson and DeJarnette) all went out at a pace that was too fast for them on this day. As we have all seen (perhaps experienced ourselves), XC is not a forgiving race when oxygen debt sets in. I assume that A.J., primarily a miler, paid a heavy price for the early pace, and for trying to run two races within 8 days off a poor base (he started training very late due to his long track season ending in Europe this Summer). Basically, Oregon had three great seasons, and now the cycle begins again. We are fooling ourselves if we think that an Oregon program will be down for very long. They are the gold standard for collegiate competition.
