By not risking a breakdown later in the race if they burnt themselves out trying to beat chelanga, who had no impact on the team scoring.

The risk of going for the individual win is pretty clear from the way that a number of guys fell way off the pace, McNeill, Chenoweth, and others.

If you do not know what team work is then you haven't raced for your team. Go to Flotrack and watch Diego Estrada's interview. Listen what he says when his teammate (David McNiell(SP??) is no longer there. The puzzled and somewhat upset look in face really tells the story of having a race plan that does not go as planned means to these runners that care about running for the team. That is one interview that I will not foreget.

You must rememember these runners train together for months. They run for each other and the team. And, yes some of these runners would carry their teammates jocks for them if it would help the team win.

There is a comfort level on having a teammate near you. That is why Cross Country is a team sport.

That whole team running thing worked great for Stanford didn't it? You people all forgot how Oregon won their titles, not that long ago? They didn't run as a team at all. Yea, it looks genius when it works, but if not...well, you've all Stanford the last two years. I personally get way more jacked and run way better when I know my teammate is out hammering to get the win or a medal or whatever, instead having hang back and make sure I'm doing alright.

Your post would be meaningful if:

1. Okie stated fielded a full track team; rather than spending most of their scholarships on foreigners and ringers for cross country.

2. If anyone gave a crap about Okie State or Okie State Cross Country.

--I was in Tulsa a few days ago, and saw no billboards, no press, no support for their team AT ALL.

If GF ran for Oregon, he'd have billboards around town.

XC matters little to the USA, and Okie State even less...unless it is football.

Hahahaa that makes me laugh... seriously, how can you not find that interview to be hilarious.

Here's a great example of someone being so whacked up by bad strategy that he was totally NOT focused on running a good race, REGARDLESS of what happened with anyone else.

You don't see the Africans using such dumb strategies as are used in the NCAA.

Anyone know what happened to Jerhoemee Murray from Century HS in Oregon. He was a distance runner that signed with Oklahoma State back in 2006, and was a freshman on the team during the 2006-07 season. He would be a senior this year had he not disappeared?

You're statement is kind of like saying: I was in Portland and saw no Billboards for OU cross country.

I was wondering the same thing about Jerhoemee. After a great HS senior year he looked like he was coming on strong for college.

Um, Sacramento is over a hundred miles away from Standford. You're right, I don't get your point.

12.6 scholarships into distance team isn't a "plan", its a very unique and yet huge advantage!

Like what? In something like bike racing your team really does matter. But at the relatively slow speeds of running, how does running in a pack help? It's not like your 4th and 5th runner pulls you to the line and you sprint like heck on the last 200m. You don't gain a lot from sitting behind someone, and your team mate can't move you up through the pack, so why hold back? If it hurts the slower guys' feeling to have to run farther back, then perhaps a 'trip to namby pamby land to get some self confidence' is in order. Besides, to continue the cycling comparison, in cycling the slower guys have to keep up with the faster riders in order to be of any use. You don't ride slower so you can be with your teammates.

Holding back for a slower teammate is kinda wussy unless the consequences of not doing so involve capture by the enemy or death by some means or another (hypothermia, animal attack, etc.)
