Standards for 2011 Worlds Announced (Men's 1500 3:35.00, Men's 10k 27:40)

Damn ! I didn't qualify. Again.

Qualification period is shorter too.

For 2009 Worlds:

Performances must be achieved during the qualification period of 1 January 2008 (3 September 2007 for the Marathons, Race Walking and Combined Events) to 3 August 2009 (midnight Monaco time).

For 2011 Worlds:

Performances must be achieved during the qualification period from 1 October 2010 (1 January 2010 for the 10,000m, Marathon, Combined Events, Race Walks and Relays) to 15 August 2011 (midnight Monaco time).

Men's 800 1:45.40 same

Men's 1500 now 3:35.00 (was 3:36.40)

Men's 5000 13:20 same

Men's 10k 27:40 was 27:47

Men's Steeple 8:23.1 was 8:23

Women's 800 1:59.80 was 2:00.00

Women's 1500 4:05.90 was 4:06.00

Women's 5k 15:10 was 15:14

Women's 10k 31:45 same

Women's steeple 9:43 was 9:40

The moral of the story is if you want to make worlds run the steeple.

The 10k standard came down a lot (only 16 Americans have ever hit it) but in addition to Solinsky and Rupp, Tim Nelson and Bobby Curtis have it.

Alan Webb would qualify for every race except steeple. That's what i'm talkin' bout - hell yea!

Thanks for noticing that. That is a huge development the change in qualifying window. I assume the stat geeks looked at the anticipated # of entrants with a shorter qualifying window and figured it wouldn't make too much of a difference but it seems like a big change to me. Maybe because I ran the 10k and there are only like one or two a year you can do.

10 years ago, we would all look at qualifying times like these and wonder if we were going to get mulitple guys in some events. It's a nice feeling to know that we shouldn't have too much trouble filling spots. The 10k not included in that assessment, however. As Wejo said though, it has more to do with lack of opportunities to run fast 10ks. Hopefully we get a few more guys under 27:40 (and 30, 20...) Remember when Ritz and Webb ran low 27:30s and that seemed HUGE. Nice to know we are progressing.

Other thoughts:

Funny people talk about the steeple being easiest when in fact, Huling was the only sub-8:23 guy we had in this country last year.

Also, rumor has it John Chaplin has decided there will be no chasing of standards past the USATF Championships. This is a big deal!

Will Stanford 10k be a big deal this year or will the top guns (Solnsky, Rupp) sit it out because they already have it.

Remember in 2004 when Robison made the Olympic team because he had the time from previous year and it basically rendered the US Trials unimportnat. It will be the same this year if you can't chase afterwards!

if you're an American women and run 9:50's in the steeple that puts you on top. Most girls who run that don't even have a prayer at making the USATF national qualifying standard in any other distance event but the steeple.

All I have to say is USA Women's Steeple is WEEK.

If no chasing of standards is allowed, the 1500 guys will need to be in great shape in May, and might be worthless by early September. A sub-3:35 in the US is rare. No Carson any more. Pre is a mile (they have auto timing at 1500, but it's usually windy and you'd have to be on pace for a sub-3:52 or so). Cardinal is usually too cool for a fast 1500.

With times from 2009 not counting either, I hope they will allow the chasing of marks.

The 10,000 is from Jan 1, 2010; if it was October before, how many qualified between October and the end of the year -- i.e., no difference for the 10,000.

With the meet later, there will be a big gap between the Trials and the WCs - allow chasing for 10 days afterward.

These seem like very reasonable standards to me. Maybe a half century from now these will be the NCAA championship standards.

That 1500 standard is pretty quick considering the short window.

The US had 4 guys hit 3:32 and 5 guys under 3:35 last year.

Now none of them have a qualifier going into 2011.

It changes the preparation for the season.

The US Trials are at the end of June and they would like to hit a 3:34 before then.

But it is rare to find too many sub 3:35 races that early.

You will likely have guys chasing the standard after the Trials.

If Lagat runs the 5000 and Wheating the 800, the US would be hard pressed to run a complete 1500m team at 2011 Worlds.

Huling was not the only American to run under 8:23 last year. Bruce ran 8:22.

They still both have to run the A standard again with the new qualifying window.

lamong, manzano, g. fernandez, webb, torrance and probably 2-3 new 1500 runners the USA will have a full 1500 team no problem.

i fully expect the USA to have 3 runners in all distance races and 5 in both marathons.

Last year was the first time ever more than three Americans ran 3:35 flat or better in a single year.

Three did it in 2009. Only one in 2008. Only 2 in 2006.

I agree there is more depth than ever.

I expect Wheating to run the 1500 and I expect the US to field a full team.

I don't expect the top three at next year's USATF to come out having a qualifier in hand.

I see them chasing times in Europe.

So the focus may not be on peaking for Worlds.

the athletes and coaches aren't being caught by surprise. the preparation and execution for '10 will be different than a non world, non Olympic year. chasing standards post USA's can't be counted on by the athletes and coaches.

Filling spots is not the goal, the development of US distance running is. Some perspecitive is merited.

US 800m,1000m, 2000m records have stood for decades.

1500/3000/5000/10000 all set by athletes running less

volume than the previous US record holder for those distances.

Of the two US distance runners who might be able to compete for medals at world level in the marathon, neither seems to need especially high training volume to run his best: Ritzenhein cut his volume to run his 60' half marathon and got hurt going higher volume. Rupp has averaged about 80 miles/week to progress, focusing on quality. The US record holder, Kahnnouchi is of course a former miler.

And the 100k road record is still standing, set in 90s.
