I'm a junior in high school, who runs all 3 seasons of distance running. Over the past year I've lost a full year of competitive running due to shin and foot injuries. Because of this, I lost winter and spring track last year, and XC this year. Luckily, I've managed to fix this problem by correcting my form, and am now running 30 miles a week, and also doing numerous stretching and strengthening exercises. I'm trying desperately to improve to catch up to all of my fellow teammates that have been improving drastically over the past year while I just stood there getting their splits. I want to be able to consider myself a varsity runner, and a useful member of the team, which I've never been able to do. If I do anything in high school, I want to run a sub 17 min 5k. This is definitely a stretch, considering my pr is only a 19:55, which I ran last year at this time. I don't know, is this goal possible? Or am I just way in over my head and should just quit now while I'm still partially sane regarding the situation? Any tips from people who have already run 17 min/faster? All of which I'd like to hear.
