Steve Magness

to draw conclusions, one has to have more than one instance to draw from. one bad race means nothing. multiple bad races mean something.

Steve Magness ran a 4:01 outdoors last year at the end of the season. Outdoor season has just begun. I believe Magness will drop a 3:40 or faster in the 1500. People need to stop crucifying athletes for having a bad race. What if he was sick, coming off of high miles, or injured? Stop hiding behind a fake internet name to trash talk someone who is faster and has more work ethic than you.

As far as I'm concerned, he has years before he has to start dropping bomb times. I hope he keeps pouring on the mileage.

I am a huge steve magness fan, I think he'll do wonders on the national level in 2-3 years. He's not running 3:40 this year. Read his running log. He is adjusting to higher milage and going to school at Rice. I think by the end of the outdoor season he should get down to 3:42-3:45 once he rests his legs a little and hits some sharper stuff. I think he is going to hit some great performances in Cross next season. Of course, this is one shmuck's opinion from looking at his running log. Take it for what its worth.

Is it possible that the high mileage is not helping him right now? I know it will help him in the long term, but will he be able to race well and keep up the mileage?

Easy Jon. Southern Dirt was pretty much just describing how the race went. He never said that Steve was done for or trash talked him in any way. I wouldn't call Southern's post a crucifixion in any sense. Everyone is curious as to how he's doing and this was interesting info. I'm sure we all know that he will do great things later in the year.

Jon.....I disagree with him 3:40, i dont think that will happen. I have personally met the kid and dont think to highly of him, but he is a good athlete and a very talented runner. But your post was alittle to harsh, we're u offended somehow?

was it too early for bekele and everyone else at world cross since its an olympic year? Bekele ran the indoor world 5k record in the last month. I realize steve is far from bekele's level, but the point still applies. Everyone else isnt scared to run fast now, why are we?

Why is it that too early in the year only applies to americans? Not singling out steve in particular, but I hear this with every good american runner that its too early.

Well, Steve actually got 4th in the Rice meet with 3:54.13 for the 150. However, his indoor bests this year are 1:53.85, 4:08.34 (mile), and 8:23.23 for the 3000. Two comments: I believe Steve has been rather injury prone in the past and only was really healthy his senior year in high schol. Maybe he or the coach is being cautious to preserve his career and build a stroner base. Secondly, some guys take time to develop at the college level. After all, who would have predicted Sean Jefferson winning the NCAA mile?

Raul has been a hardass of late, at the Sam Houston meet two weeks ago, he and another guy ran the DMR, by themselves. Raul ran the 1200 and then came back 58 seconds later to run the 800, and his teammate ran the 400 and 1600. They won the race over teams with 4 runners.

Steve did all of the pace work this Friday, and it was humid. It wasn't a great race by Magness, but it wasn't terrible.

The guy's running 110+ miles per week, he told me himself. I couldn't run my best off that mileage when I was in college, why should he?

So is Bekele going to be racing 2-3 times a month for the next two months? Or did he just complete a season and will not begin to seriously compete again until maybe May or June?

There's a huge difference, other than the talent level you mentioned, between comparing an American collegiate to a professional runner. They have different seasons and it's irrelevant to xc whether this is an Olympic year or not. Track and XC are distinct seasons when you're a professional, too, not just here is America; we just have it at a different time. Bekele wasn't particularly impressive in his first xc race this season (at least compared to his usual high standards), either. Though it was "fast" and he ran "faster" at the end of the season. I imagine some might see Magness's race as "fast" and expect him to run "faster" later this year.

And by the way, this is Rice University, one of the country's most academically challenging schools. Maybe Steve doesn't want to be a pro runner. I know Molly Huddle at Notre DAme has talked about the difficulties of classwork and ND is presumably an easier place. Maybe Steve doesn't share our one-sided enthusiasm for his career.

c'mon, don't trash ND. rice is #16 in u.s news/world report. nd is in #19.

at ANY school (ivy league or community college) your education is as easy/hard as you want it to be. you can find bullshit classes at even the top universities and you can find your head spinning at a state school. you can do as much or as little work as you think is necessary.

maybe magness is really blowing his classes off to run a lot, and he just ran poorly this race. maybe huddle thinks she's going to rewrite most of western 20th century philosophy and she's racking her brain. the point is you have no idea how seriously either of these two take their studies, and have no idea about their aptitude in the classroom, whats easy for one might be hard for the other, and vice versa.

don't make excuses for magness, he doesn't need it. he's a talented guy. its ONE race, and early season at that.

Not an excuse, but if you look at his running log (as it is online); you will see he's hitting at least 110-120 miles a week, and what kind of speed? ...tempo runs, long intervals...

Let him get his base in. Then if you beat him in the summer when hes hitting his peaks you han talk $#lT.
