For summer base building or even winter ramp ups after some time off after XC, what are appropriate paces for guys to be running on most days, outside of "listening to their body" or "just run baby." I read some stuff by Hadd saying that 8 min/mile could be harder than 7 min/mile over a long run because slow twitch fibers weren't activated. At the same time, I would think shuffling along is not going to help much either. Came to mind after a coach complained about guy's efforts on long runs, saying he ran his runs at 6 min/mile (a la Pre). He never broke 13 min. at 5K though and some of these guys could be knocking on the door in a year.
19 min 5K - 8 m/m?
18 min 5K - 7:30 m/m?
17 min 5K - 7 m/m?
16 min 5K - sub 7?
Asking any coaches and/or smart runners.
Thanks.
