So who do you think the best coach in the UK is? past or present
So who do you think the best coach in the UK is? past or present
Can this even be a question? Frank Horwill and Peter Coe by far
UJCM, how much do you know about Frank? I pressume that you have never met the man. I have, and he is a great speaker, he can ramble on for hours. But, as far as being the best coach in the UK?? Nahhh, even Tim Hutchings would not say that of him. Have you ever seen Hutchings publicly commend Horwill for taking him to any of his Silver Medals? NO!
Thats because Frank talks up his part in Tim's success to such a degree that he wont even talk about it.
Two years ago, I tried to get him to comment on how much Frank had helped him over the years and he refused to comment, except for "he wasn't my only influence you know".
Besides, his theories are easy to pick apart (which means that they are not solid theories), and his use of the Balke test and Cosmin tests is a worry as they are inaccurate. His formulae are sometimes laughable too.
But as i say, great speaker. Inspirational.
HA
Frank Horwill is a nutter. He isn't a scientist but believes his theories / formulas (e.g. the 4 second rule whereby a 50 second 400m run WILL run at 54 pace for 800, 58 pace for the mile 62 pace for 2 miles etc) are fundamental laws which are set in stone.
He sets very hard sessions, but how many of his current group are actually benefitting from it? Maybe he was once good but I think he's lost the plot.
It's all about finsing a couach who works for YOU. There is not one BEST coach, since coaching is an art more than a science, so by this criteria MY coach is obviously the best (for me!)
Someone else who I do rate highly is Paul Wallace. I've met him at a few events and he seems to talk alot of sense.
Lees has given up and most of his runners dont make it to senior level......unless they move on at Uni age. Lees had a very short time at National level.
Having said this, he is a nice guy and seems very knowledgable........pretty sure that he used to be fairly quick when he was younger too, not that this ever means anything.
Jimmy Hedley used to have a great group in Jarrow, even when you disclude Cram.
The BMH coach must have something good going on as he is managing to keep his athletes going even after they have moved away from home. This is obviously a difficult thing and he is doing it well. Whittle, Tulba, Rees-Jones etc.
Ricky Soos coach is a bit of a dick, anybody know him?
Farrow is doing wonders with the youth in Gloucestershire.
Mick Woods is doing well with the youngsters and bringing a few of them into senior level too.
HA
Harry Wilson did a great job with other athletes than Ovett: Wade, Muggelstone, etc.
Pretty sure that Mugglestone was coached by George Blackburn at Westbury, not Wilson.
But yes, he did a good job with a few others.

Frank Horwill is no way the best coach in the United Kingdom. have you noticed that whenever he backs his theories up by giving examples of athletes he coaches its always tim hutchings. ok. that was ages ago. a few good woman. but some more examples please. and also i hate the way he always goes on how coe was a million times superior to ovett etc. maybe he was better but not that mcuh
Ricky Soos coach is a bit of a dick, anybody know him?
Yeah, he's my coach. Not a dick.
Paul Wallace is now coaching at brum uni. Bud Baldaro is a coach I highly respect.
Harry Wilson is the best of all time
Brian Clough. Most definitely.
sorry
but
he
is!
oooooooookay then. *backs out of argument, cornered by the volley of visceral, razor sharp logic, wit and explanation*
and he does, i admit, tell some truly shit jokes. i apologise for ever disagreeing with you.
hehehehe, glad that you could read between the lines sam. its not just his jokes, its his whole attitude. the guy is a complete arse whenever he attends a meeting/training day etc. he just argues for the sake of it, and cannot back up his arguements with any substance. not wishing to burden you with your coaches annoying traits though, i am sure that he is fine for you and the others.
HA
Haha, you are obviously a coach then. Probably from the Mids area. Hmmmm? I wonder??
Tubby Smith is a class act. Pitino was too egotistical. Joe B Hall was a jerk. Adolph Rupp was a racist but one of the best coaches of all time. Go UK Mildcats--thx for ruining my March Madness pool entry.
Wilson did coach Muggs at least after, if not before, his Euro junior 5k win and whilst Simon was at Oxford. Only reason I know is that I was there training with him.

Mark Rowland wins this one
