Wardian ran 6:49 http://www.iau-ultramarathon.org/images/file/finish.pdf

Very impressive. Will be interesting to see if he is able to recover and run JFK 50 in two weeks. Any idea what the american record is for 100k?
There is no doubt he will be there for the JFK 50 miler. He will probably win it as well. By the way his pace was 6:35 for 62 miles.
Only five people competed?
No.
Here's the iau males:

no, thats only the top five. im not sure how many started, but this list has 17 male finishers:

It looks like there were 92. I admit to being a skeptic about Wardian, but I have become a fan. He is just willing to lace them up and race anywhere, anytime, at any distance. Plus he actually competes for the win in most of his races.
By the way, there were some good Americans in the field. Chad Ricklefs in 14th place is a former Leadville record holder and ultrarunner of the year.
Can he wear his team USA jersey at future road races he competes in?
I'm starting to think that Geb stepped aside to clear the way for Michael Wardian.

Wardian could get the record at JFK,but his trail skills are relatively weak. He has to make up for being slow on the 15 trail miles on the AT. Of course, her is a beast and can certainly pull it off on the right day.
Ultras are definitely a different set of challenges. Being a good marathoner or even road ultra guy is no gurantee of success at 50 mi or 100 km or beyond.
2:15 marathoner Max King and Wardian have yet to come close to Anton K at even moderate, non-altitude, trail ultras. It would be interesting to see Roes and Anton K go after a fast marathon. 2:25?

He's not as strong on the trails but he is not bad either. He won White River in 2008 which is much more of a pure trail course than JFK in a pretty fast time. In 2009 he did finish a distant second to Krupika (who set the course record) but beat Jurek.
What's impressive to me about Wardian is his versatility. For someone that doesn't focus exclusively on the trails like the top ultra trail guys he is still competitive.
Thanks for posting this. I once saw Wardian interviewed after a marathon. He was very polite and before answering any questions he insisted on thanking all the volunteers for their time and effort to make things happen. I wish he could make the Olympic Team; that would be great.
Is this guy white? Because if he is this counts as a major championship medal for the USA.
I think many are gettin way too excited about this finish, first off, the race is not sanctioned nor do many countries compete nor is it a TRUE world championship. Thats why its called "IAU".
Come on people this is letsrun I would have thought you would know better
top three were just a few minute apart. That has to be devastating to be that close after 62 miles. I wonder what the race tactics were like. You would have to think that they stayed together for a long time before splitting up at the end. Anyone got a post race report?
get your panties out of a wad
