I realize that sites that offer free services need to be ad-supported, but I've seen less obtrusive ads on some porn sites than on this thing. You'd think given how many similar sites *aren't* choked with this crap that the folks running the thing would wise up to their driving visitors away with the clutter.

It's a simple Google Maps hack with auto route drawing, mile markers, and elevation. It doesn't have the bells and whistles, but I usually don't need them. All I want to do is may my run. (I'm one of those people who wants to know the distance to the 10th of a mile, but I don't want to wear a GPS.)
I completely agree with the criticisms of Map My Run. It is cluttered.

Found that with the gmap update, follow roads function doesn't work on some parts of my route (bikepath). Other mapping sites that use gmap have same problem.

You just have to manually draw the bike paths.
I'd use Googalurth for every damn thing if only it would generate a damn elevation profile. All this damn functionality, including spot elevation checks at every damn point, and no damn elevation profile.
Checkout maps.cloudmade.com it uses data from openstreetmap.org. It allows you to follow trails and such if they have been mapped. If they haven't been mapped. You can map them, either with aerial photography or with a gps.
Map my run is for beginner runners and hobby joggers who run less than 15mpw and have never heard of gmap pedometer
