Im not talking about dipping while you run nor do I want to hear any outlandish stories. I am looking for specific physiological effects that snuff has upon running.

Snuff? That's for amateurs. I smoke 10 cigarettes a day and still manage a 20 min 5K every other weekend.
it does effect you for sure. Can't say how much, but nicotine ties up your hemoglobin.
In summary, the results presented here clearly demonstrate that nicotine improved exercise endurance by 17 ± 7%, and in the absence of any effect on the usual peripheral markers, such as ventilation, heart rate and blood metabolites, we conclude that nicotine prolongs endurance by a central mechanism that may involve nicotinic receptor activation and/or altered activity of dopaminergic pathways. http://ep.physoc.org/content/91/4/705.full

As a coach I encourage all of my runners to chew wintergreen Skoal on the runs. It improves blood circulation, oxygen intake and leads to better speed, endurance and recovery. I sure hope this stuff never gets banned because quite frankly it is better than HGH.

there's a strong scientific finding, smoking 10 cigarettes a day makes you SUCK
It'll just give you oral cancer and you'll end up with a trach. Then no running for you.
dehydration
If it hindered running then why would all baseball players dip while they were playing?
In all seriousness, it has no effect on running.
Hmm that article on nicotine improving endurance is pretty interesting. Obviously smoking decreases performance because you can't breathe, but perhaps dip doesn't have any negative effects at all.

...except putting holes in your face and giving you throat cancer.

Which allows you to take in more air, duh! I mean if you want it, you gotta do what you gotta DO!
Once again, I am only looking for physiological effects dipping has on running. I AM NOT looking for effects dipping has on your mouth. Last time I checked, the state of your mouth has little to do with running.
It would be interesting for someone to apply a couple patches and see if it helps.
What if you're running your mouth?
ahh, interesting thread. the anonymous coward strikes again with a pseudo name
I have heard of hockey players putting it between their toes. That would eliminate mouth cancer... not sure what it does haven't tried it. Maybe i will and report back.
Well, I guess dipping doesn't decrease or increase performance at all. Always wondered about it (im having a dip right now before I go out for my 10 miler :))
Last time I checked, effect was a noun.
For what it's worth, chewing tobacco (the Swedish brand Ettan) is amazingly common among male national elite and even world-class cross country skiers in Finland and Sweden. Can't speak about other countries, but these guys have it in their upper lip all the time after or between training sessions.
