I haven't seen much discussion on the fact that German Fernandez has seemed content to be but a "top 3" runner on his own team. Is he still not 100% after his injury/anemia or is he just sitting and waiting to let loose at the end of the season? His friends Luke and Chris haven't been shy about winning races and being at the front. With his talent, I'm wondering how he can't be OSU's #1 at this point... hasn't he been healthy for a while?
No reason for him to hammer to win a race when he can let his teammates just edge ahead. And it's not like Colby or Girma aren't fast. Lets wait for the big meets before we start to judge too much.
German has learned well. He might fall down, or finish in last place, which is exactly what we want him to do.
I'm a little bit concerned about German getting consistently beaten by Colby Lowe, but let's wait until after xc season is over before we hit the panic button. I think that Lowe might be the better xc runner anyways.
I agree, Colby only finished a few seconds off Derrick at NXN in 2007? and has been really consistent. The dude is going to keep rolling without injury and flying under the radar with GF getting all the attention and then drop some huge times Solinsky style.

I'd be happy for him to do well, now that he's been humbled for his crime of skipping indoor NCAAs and having stupid fans.
So, go German, get top 10, but don't win, because I don't want to have to listen to your fanboys again.

I think what numb-nuts meant to say was German is using every meet up to Nationals as focused-tempo runs and staying within himself and is therefore not racing to the finish in these meets vs. some of the other top guys who are actually racing at more than a tempo-run effort.
So the other guys aren't huge vaginas. Good to know.

yes, yes, this is it exactly. this is why German won't be prepared in the final race, just like the last couple of years. this is the brilliance of our plan!
I too have been wondering why he's not winning every race by a good amount. He's sort of seeming more sensitive and lacking in confidence every year... but I really have nothing to base that on but my own sick thoughts...
German is a 1500 guy. He isn't supposed to be winning 10k xc events. No one bashed Wheating for finishing in the pack at NCAAs.
Wheating doesn't have German's resume at longer distances.

German didn't have the duration of base-building that the other top guys had due to his injury. He should be running these races hard, but not all out. Because of his excellent speed, he doesn't need to be perfectly sharp to do well when it counts at the champs, he just needs to be very fit. Running these meets the way he has been is the right thing to do.
