What is the impact of running too fast in training

It means you aren't running enough miles. Run 100 miles a week and I bet you won't be running 20 seconds slower per mile than your 10k pace.

From my incomplete understanding, training at that pace his clear benefits, but it is unlikely that your body can handle successive days at the pace. It makes it more likely that you will get injured or see symptoms of over training/lack of adequate recovery.

There are some people who say that if you are feeling good, run faster, but I would think that you can't be feeling that good everyday.

impact of training too fast = racing too slow.

i once knew a coach who insisted his mens college team run 6min or faster on their easy days. his team was consistently at the back of their conference (to remain nameless, i'll just say it was a BIG division 1 conference...). his mens team, despite having amazing workouts, never raced fast - because their efforts were put into the workouts (per the coach's request...). needless to say, the true fitness of the entire team was never fully displayed where it counted (in races).

sometimes it's good to force atleast one or two easy days, and the rest just let it flow.

For your easy days, make your mantra, "Don't ruin tomorrow's run." Seriously. Worked for me. If you run too fast on your easy days, you will not be able to run your key workouts at their necessary paces. And you won't get much faster.

Solinsky's recovery paces are about 5:40. So sure if you're a 27 minute 10Ker, go for it.

Hahahahahaha, I have to laugh at some of the responses.

Look, it sounds a lot like you're not doing any structured workouts, and that when you're feeling like going faster, you go faster. Why do you think there is something wrong with that? You just happen to have your workouts disguised in your distance runs - which is great. Starting runs slow and ending close to race pace describes the way Kenyans train. There is no better way to improve your aerobic efficiency.

As you say, this happens 3-4 times per week. That is the perfect. Don't mess with it too much, other than gradually increasing your mileage now. After building up to a step wait for your ability to fly through 3-4 runs per week again, then take another modest step in mileage.

I'd say your faster friends train too slow, or put too much emphasis on intervals so that they won't ever build the basic aerobic efficiency.

One more thing . . .

Do you think you are faster now than before this type of training routine happened? Proof is in the pudding.

you can tell me i'm wrong, but i'm sorry i have proof that this CAN work. granted everyone trains differently, i broke 29minutes (10k) with recovery days (days between workouts) OVER 7 minute pace - and i'm sure i'm not the only one who's done that, i personally know of a few other guys (faster than me) who've done similar recovery days. it's not rocket science - the recovery days are RECOVERY, and the hard workouts are HARD. main point: let it FLOW (some times, 7 minute pace feels like walking, sometimes it feels more than that, the point is to pace yourself based on EFFORT, not time.)

6 min/mile isn't fast, but it is too fast for most runners' easy days and too slow to be a quality workout unless it is an extra long tempo run.

A really successful training program has a huge variation in paces.

Hold on, the question isn't whether fast training is good. It is as long as you are recovering.

The topic is specifically running "too fast" in training - that will lead to injury and/or overtraining.

Running too fast eh? Do you really know anyone who does that? I think you mean trying too hard in training, if you want to get specific about it.

So since I feel like my recovery is fine (i.e. some days I feel like doing a double, but never do), then I shouldn't worry about it?

I don't feel close to injury (do you ever?) nor do I feel overtrained. I guess the biggest benefit of slowing down is to increase my mileage.

If my weekly mileage stays the same (~50), no benefit of running slower.
