To be considered, I'd think your torso, shoulders, etc, need to hit the track at one point or another.

i've heard john trautmann tell a story about running the steeple his freshman year in high school. bit it big time twice, but still ran ~9:45.
2000 Big XII meet. Slattery was leading slightly on the back stretch of the last lap. He hit the last barrier before the water jump and just wiped out on his face. Still got up and finished 3rd in around 8:40 or so eventhough he looked pretty dazed.
I have the Fox Sports Net coverage of that on video. He catches his front foot and goes head over heels. He was about to waste the Okie State guy too.
2003 DIII Championships in Canton, NY. In the women's final, a girl in position to be an all american(5th or 6th) fell over the last barrier before the finish. One of the most depressing things I've ever seen. Best of luck to her this year.
What about the 1976 Olympic 3kSC won in WR time? The bronze medlasit had been fighting for the lead until the last barrier when his trail leg clipped and he landed face first on the track...
and of course henry marsh '83 WC.
destroyed the final barrier, but still ran 8:20
Dan Berkeland from Cal Poly SLO the defending DII Champ was leading or in 2nd at the 94 (I think) DII Champs when he hit something and was stumbling around in the last 100 meters. He went from winning to 6th or 7th in the matter of 100 meters.
