p15 distance training for masters by arthur lydiard/garth gilmour
Over 210 miles a week. 6 months.
I've done over 210 miles a week. Background ran doubles for 5 years avg 100 mi a week at least before 25 years of age. I run marathon. My HR doesn't move at all even past 22 miles. maybe 140HR sub 7 mi pace an hour. Max 200HR. You really wanna run 200mi a week? It's hell! I mean like tired all the time. Wanna fall down and die tired.
No way he recommends 200 miles/week for anyone, ever, let alone Masters. Try again.
I thought Lydiard was 100mpw not including shakeout runs.

his book, his words. get the book and read it. its in black and white.
would love to hear the lydiard folks comment, plus my original question was has anyone ever done it and what was their success.

No, I have not tried it yet.

I did read it. He never recommended 200 mpw for anyone.
He TRIED 200 mpw. Experimented on himself and found it to be too much. That was why he recommended 100 mpw.
people, this isn't a debate on whether or not he said it. it is a question if anyone TRIED it. lydiard DOES say on page 15 of distance training for masters that his marathon-type training system is base on upto 200miles per week if the athlete has the time and the will. FACT. (ok, actually 320km, but thats pretty much 200miles)
has anyone actually tried with success? thanks. this is not a bash of lydiard. i actually think his training methods are the most sound.
That's a nice sentence. It comes at... what... the first, or second page of a chapter titled "Starting from Scratch" as I recall? Sorry if I don't know eactly, it's been a few years and I've got my copy in storage. That's not exactly recommending 200 mpw for anyone. Lydiard explicitly did NOT recommend much over 100 mpw. He said that many times.
But hey, I don't want to rain on your fantasy parade. Since you have your copy hand, please give us a sample of the schedule he recommends. You did ask if anyone had tried his "schedule". What is day 3 like? Remind me.

Exactly. But Jeff Julian did get to that sort of volume. He would often
do two thousand miles in his ten week build up.
So what were your PRs before and after your 200 mpw undertaking?
"If the athlete has the time and the will..."
That's not the same thing as him prescribing a marathon schedule that says to run 200 miles per week. He's just saying a person is welcome to do it if they think they can handle it. Lydiard himself found that 200 miles a week was too much, but if you could ask him whether he'd do it again, he'd probably say yes, because of what he learned in the process, how it taught him his limits, and because he probably did get some benefit even though he didn't see a reason to repeat it. Your mileage may vary.
Lydiard never advocates 200 miles a week. Ideal is about 100 miles a week at near the best aerobic effort before sharpening. I did it for one year and was the best marathoner in my area besides one Olympian from ironically New Zealand. Read Running the Lydiard Way again. Miles not Kilometers!!
The 200 miles per week includes the supplementary training...it's still 100 a week in singles but with an added morning and possibly afternoon jog, which puts the total mileage somewhere between 100 and 200.
Joe Newton always tells a story at clinics about how when Lydiard was at his house Newton asked him why everyone is now running 100 mpw and still can't beat Lydiards guys. Lydiards response was that he always tells people his guys run 100 mpw but in reality they are closer to 200 mpw.
But aside from Julian he never had anyone doing 200 mile weeks and Julian kind of did that on his own. I think Ray Puckett could get over close at times and Richard Tayler would get to 150-160.

holy shnikes we all need to run a ton more then!
And to think I still managed a 15:02 PR off 35 mpw. Maybe if I tried 200 mpw, then I could be running 12:50?! I'll keep you posted of its success in 2012!
