This kid started running a year ago, after dropping football. Ran a 15:11 5k, pretty good for a linebacker?

Yeah, that's excellent for anyone in high school. Dropped about 50 pounds.
My college teammate went from being a left handed quarterback on the JV team as a college freshman to an OK 400/800 meter runner that spring - and then starting running seriously - becoming a NCAA finals qualifier in the 5k. He indeed lost a lot of weight, but was always a good all around athlete. Incredibly high achiever in all walks of life. This kid reminds me of the same.

That's a crazy progression. Thanks for the link. If it were April 1 (and a track story) with a name like "Forrest" I would have thought it was a joke.
very impressive. Line backer and 15:11 5k in the same sentence.
Awesome story, can't wait to see more on this guy!
Of course, this thread caught my eye.
Being a HS first team all-state linebacker, college player and runner now for over 30 years, I can see that this kid has talent and knows the results which can come from hard work.
Very impressive. Wishing him continued success.
Ohio had a guy in the late 90's or early 00's who was a quarterback on Friday nights and ran Saturday's. He ended up 3rd or so in the state XC meet. He went on to Univ. of Cincinnati and was an NCAA qualifier and possibly an all-american steepler. I think it was Chad Disbennett, but am not 100%.
Wheating-like story...giving up 52 lbs shows real commitment for a kid like that
Lyerly said he has had to rethink his goals since last weekend.
“Over the summer, I had no set goals,” he said. “I was still trying to figure it out. I was new to the sport. I had no idea what I was doing basically except to run. Now that I knew that I have raced some of the best guys in the country, I definitely feel like I can put up a fight. I am not racing to see who is the fastest; I am racing to see who has the most guts.”
The most GUTS! haaaaaaaaaaaahahahhahahaha Get a load of this A-Hole!
great story.
I wonder if he's been doing some reading on Prefontaine or if he came up with that quote by himself.

Definitely looks like he's lost quite a bit of mass.
i was ready to be disbelieving about course etc but obv that is a legit race. great story!
First we have Wheating who doesn't start running until his Senior year, now this. How much hidden talent is out there?
There is a 4:20 miler at almost every high school in the nation, I'm sure. Not that that is super talented, but if there's a 4:20 guy at every school, imagine what else there could be.
thanks, good luck to the kid.
Wait for it...wait for it...RUN, FORREST, RUN!
Seriously, good for this kid. What I wouldn't give to be a high school runner again full of promise and enthusiasm for the sport. As compared to the old, fat burned-out jogger I've become.
This reminds me of Jake Maas from South Dakota. He was state champ in XC, 1600 (4:20ish), and 800 for as least his senior year (can't remember if there were earlier titles) in the mid-1990s. I think he was All-State in Football (QB), basketball, and baseball. I remember he would go out and dominate a XC race on Friday afternoon and then be starting QB in on Friday night. Smart kid too. He ended up at Stanford and then a stint with the Farm Team after that.
he can probably pound the miles since he isn't a delicate skinny distance runner

Not even close. My school record is 4:25, and I know plenty of schools that have slower records. And that's for ALL the kids throughout the school's history. I don't think they're as widespread as you make them seem.
He's 145 lbs. Is that not skinny?
