Yeah, I was just watching a documentary on him last night I think it was. Very inspirational and sad. The guy was doing a marathon a day on one leg, and while recovering from, and then getting again, cancer.
Terry Fox was truly running to fight cancer. Dean K has always run to promote Dean K.
I'm on the younger side so I didn't know who he was until I saw most of the documentary last night. I'm simply in awe of his desire and determination to challenge himself in that way with the ultimate goal of helping other people. I also thought about the difference between Terry Fox and Dean K. Rather than slam Dean K., I'll just say I completely agree Terry Fox is simply on an astronomically different level. He was clearly an amazing person.
The thing is prothestic legs were such crap back then. He literally hoped the 3,000 miles he did.
I won the Terry Fox 5K in 1998 in Austin (ran 16:47 and smoked the field by more than a minute). I am the bomb and just as good as Terry himself, thus better than Dean Karnaseses
fact.
Dean K has elevated running the public eye, however. People know about running because of him. Maybe it's because we're in the i-age now (web, twitter, etc.). Terry didn't have that.
He definitely hoped.

I was 13 when Terry ran his Marathon of Hope. It was a ridiculous prosthetic compared to what is available today.
He intended to raise a modest amount of money and raised so much at that time and many more times than that since.
CBC had a poll for some time on who are Canadian's heros.
Turns out that Terry Fox won that poll over so many other great Canadians.
There is a rocky mountian named after him and several statues, one in the Nations Capital and one in BC's Capital....
Can't forget his replacement Steve Fonyo - who had 1 leg as well and left Thunder Bay to finish Terry's run and finished in Victoria, BC.
There is a beach metres away from the Terry Fox Statue called Steve Fonyo Beach. He got married on that beach this summer.
He was a troubled guy and had his problems however, he did help complete the journey - helping to perpetuate the legend of the revered, Fox.
Fox is legendary.
Terry Fox was a BEAST!
Although not well known in the US, there's probably not a single person over 40 in Canada who doesn't think he's a hero.
If you're in NYC on October 16 there is a run in his memory and to support cancer research.
It should be added that he did this in an era in which this was very unusual. There were no other (to my knowledge) people running or biking or wheelchairing across countries to raise money.
There was also far less media coverage - no twittering, or live updates - throw in how rural much of his route was, he was not doing it for glory or attention.
He was simply a man on a private mission to do what he could to help others beat cancer.
His hope and determination are what inspire so many of us.
You are all sheep. The ONLY reason hate on Dean K is the same reason they hate on VFFs....because they became popular.....and then you all bitch about why running isn't more popular.
Admit it, you're a bunch of outcasts and that's the way you like it...
