Hey Letsrun, I have a quick question regarding racing.
Lets say someone has ran a 16:28 3 mile, and feels like they could run 16:10-16:15. So about 5:25 pace.
At what pace would you say would be too fast for the first mile to hit this goal?
For example, if he wanted to go out at 5:20, but went a little fast with a 5:15, would that 5 seconds really hurt him? Or maybe he should have gone out at 5:25, then would that 5:15 first mile hurt him even more?
I know this isn't very coherent, but it's not exactly straightforward in my head what I'm asking. I've had one race, 2 weeks ago, where I went out in 5:23, then 5:39, and came back with a 5:26, for 16:28. The past two races, I went out in between 5:10-5:15 and have done not so well. I feel like going out around 5:15 shouldn't be that bad, why is it? Could those 5 seconds really make that much of a difference?
