I was talking to the parents of one of my kids today, this is the kids third year but they haven't exactly been too involved. I said something along the lines of "So our meet this weekend is at ______ Park, in _______ should be a fast course." And they literally said "Great. Is it just me, or does it seem like all your track meets are at parks and stuff in the fall?"

My parents are liberals, so virtually everything they say is stupid.

It is sad how totally ignorant parents can be of their kid's sport. I fully understand that not all parents are runners and do not expect 'newbies' to know much about XC or track at all. By the kid's third year though, they should know the difference between track and XC.

In my second year as head coach I decided to create a point system for lettering the athletes. The year before everyone thought they should have lettered and so did their parents. Well I sent a two page letter (after the first day of practice) showing what the athlete needed to do in order to receive their letter. It included points for taking parents, aunts or uncles to the meet, doing the fund raisers, going to practice etc. An athlete could get last place in every race but if they did everything else they would get their letter. Well that night a parent (mother) called me up and asked "Is my son going to get his letter?" The very first day of practice she wanted me to answer that question!!!!!
trythisone - So you are holding the student responsible for his aunts and uncles showing up? That is so weird. That falls under the category of the stupidest thing a coach has ever said. Does your Principal and AD know this?

Agreed. That's about the worst system for giving out varsity letters that I could think of. How does your parents coming to a meet make you a better runner. It should totally be based on what happens on the course. Some parents are shit and a kid shouldn't be punished for that.

My mom has probably said more stupid things to me than everyone else combined.

Having family at meets was a small part of a zillion ways for how to get a letter, helps kids who aren't on the A squad build up points. Reading comprehension, people!
Just out of curiosity, and I don't mean to be critical, but what is the rationale behind selecting letterman in this manner?
