Saw runner hit by car this morning

Damn I know what you mean. Hate to see that stuff. Saw one woman hit by a truck, and another just dead hit and run. Some crazy stuff happens. I don't know why people run with ipods on the street anyway. Soo dangerous.

I never run without my ipod, I run in the street against traffic, on the shoulder and exercise caution at all intersections. My routes generally avoid major intersections.

You can listen to music and still be aware of your surroundings. Just because you listen to an iPod does not mean you zone out completely (although some folks do).

Head on a swivel!

I freaking HATE running with an Ipod. I prefer the outdoor sounds (birds, rain, wind, etc.).

I also run in the street against traffic. Well, i used to.

I am now in the process of rethinking my routes.

I was hit by a car from behind while running against traffic -- the asshole was overtaking cars and came into the ongoing traffic and hit me. Fracture skull but i lived. But it was pretty damn close.

I ride a bike with an ipod. But I don't blast the IPod. And I always ride with what I call a healthy paranoia. I'm constantly riding with my head on a swivel and aware of any blind spots where a car could suddenly emerge. And if there is no clear bike lane on a busy street I go up on the sidewalk.

Thing is, once you develop the habit of being constantly aware of what is around you and what could be around you, Then it becomes second hand and you can still enjoy the experience. Ultimately I don't think listening to music running or riding is much different than someone listening to their radio in the car. But for some reason pedestrians tend to check out mentally sometimes with headphones on.

I run with my iPod playing loud and I haven't died yet.

Freak accidents happen when people drive around metal devices on wheels that can reach high speeds. Gotta love technology.

Good thread. Words of warning to be sure. I'll bet all of us have seen someone get run over. The worst thing I ever seen was a few years ago...some guy was running down the narrow two lane road a few blocks from where I worked. There was this lighted up spiraling mailbox and obnoxious fake jewelry or something and suddenly there was this sound, like a garbage truck dropped off the Empire State Building...and when I turned around to see what happened, all I could see where clowns on stilts and elephants. Circus was in town that day I guess. I don't think that guy lived.

I once got hit by a mini van while I ran through a crosswalk. I was very lucky that he had been at a complete stop and had just accelerated as I crossed in front of him. Like he said it was totally my fault because it said "walk" not "run". I was pretty shook up after being hit and didn't feel like arguing with him and just wanted to get home.

I was just finishing up a 14 mile long run and was jogging it back up my driveway when my sister backed out of the garage, knocked me down, and ran me completely over. I suffered a broken skull, vertebrae crinkling, and some brain leakage, but I lived. I run with an annoying limp now, but I'm still pretty fast. 16:42 at a 5K road race this morning.

I don't understand. How it is your fault when YOU ran through a "walk" sign? Doesn't that mean the van ran a red light?

Joggers wear ipods. Runners have more sense.

I once saw a midget get plowed down by some chick pushing a jogging stroller. The midget was clearly staring at the woman's well toned and rapidly approaching abdominal muscles, and then Kaclumpasmoooosh!!! That midget got run the hell over. The chick never even paused to see what she hit and kept on hauling ass down the sidewalk, and I just sat there and laughed and laughed and laughed.

Would being attacked by a moose be similar to being hit by a car? Just wondering because I nearly got hit by a car once.
