I was going to do a 3 mile tempo run today. I did my usual 2-3 mile warm up (with the last mile or so more medium pace) then set off on my tempo. I got carried away and went too hard the first mile, feeling it in my legs. I stopped just short of the 2nd mile, my legs hurting and I knew I'd slowed down a lot. Should I have kept going even though my legs hurt (lactic acid?) and it would have been slower or was it best to stop? After, I did a really slow 2-3 mile cooldown, and my legs still hurt and it was a sucky cooldown. Was there any benefit to this physically (mentally I'm going to try to avoid going out this fast) or did it just hurt me to try to race a tempo?
