I was charged with desiging the shirts for a local road race once: went with red long sleeve cotton shirts with advertising on back and race name on front. Cotton not because you could run in it, everyone is wearing synthetic shirts nowadays, but these shirts looked very cool with a pair of jeans. The shirt rose to the height of coolness when I saw a very hot young lady at a soccer game wearing one with the sleeves torn off and the hem tied up tight around her belly button. Best race shirt ever.

XC shirt given out at the beginning of summer training

Front: Champion in Training

Back: SUMMER... when it was 90 degrees in the shade, your competition trained... When you skipped a long run, your competition didn't... While you sat by the pool, your competition ran intervals... When you slept late, your competition woke early.. When your competition passes you in September, remember your July...

I get it, it just seems odd to me. Why would you want to advertise your enjoyment of your chosen athletic activity by pointing out that other people don't like it?
