Why would it be "too close"? If you are fit it's ok to run 20 miles the day before a 10am race.
It's OK to run 2-3 miles at 6-7 the day of the race, as well.
some people i talk to swear that they have to do it 24 hours before.

It may be OK, but I'm guessing the OP wants to know what's optimal. OP -- what's optimal is a very individual thing. Don't be afraid to experiment and find out what works for you.
