I thought the same thing when I started to put this together. And it may be right. But according to iaaf.org athlete bios Vaughn's DOB is Oct. 1 1984 making him 23 years old when he ran 13:18 in April 2008.

Yeah, he's a bit older.

Goucher ra 13:11/10 his first year out of CU. Had to have been 23ish/24 max.

Thanks much for all the additions. Not that it is reasonable to expect even more help but it doesn't hurt to ask - I couldn't find anything for Scott Fry and only limited information on Ryan Wilson (a 13:29 at age 21 and a 13:19 for which I could not find a date). Any possibility that you could point me to any web sites with more details on these two?

Since everything that I did find is the same as your note I'm sure that it's all on the money. I'm just hoping I can find some reference on line. Thanks much.

Ryan should have been 18 in 1991. When he ran at Mt. Sac in 1996 (13:28) he should have been 23. When he ran the 13:19, I thought that was two years later so 25.

Never mind, I'm an idiot. Ryan graduated in '93. How I could have gone to school with him and not known that is beyond me. Age sets in. Here's the link to his 13:19.

Wasn't Prefontaine 21 when he ran 13:22 at the 1972 trials?

It would be nice if there was a site with deep lists to verify what I'm going by from memory. Say an all time U.S. collegiate list with dates of performance and the birth dates of the runners.

I'm only going by the years I recall. McChesney held the American collegiate record of 13:15 but it was late in 1982 and he graduated high school in 1976. So he was probably actually 23.

Ryan Wilson ran 13:19 at Mt. Sac in 1996. Therefore he would have been 20 or 21.

Marc Davis ran 13:32 at Mt. Sac in 1989. He graduated in 1987 and was 19 when he ran the 13:32.

Sanchez broke Prefontaines American Junior record when he ran 13:37. He would have been 18 or 19.

Fry went 13:38 in 1987 at age 19, a few months before turning 20.

Another runner who ran when the common distance was 3 miles rather than 5000 was Gerry Lindgren Since he ran 13:44 in high school I would bet he had three mile times equivilant to 13:30 or under by the time he was 19 or 20.
