then where was maurice greenes talent last night vs basketball player dwight howard?
a non trained athlete is no longer an athlete.
no exceptions if k. bekele quit training sat on the couch eatinp chips, twinkies etc. and put on over 100 pounds he would not only not be a fast runner anymore, he might not even be able to finish a mile without walking.

bill rodger's lost smoker/drinker years are proof.
there's no way alan webb has done worse to himself since 07'.
however, talent may not go away, but it certainly will never beat andrew wheating, run an AR, or medal at the WCs.
i expect webby to become a leo/lamong-caliber miler, but nothing more.
Listing Lasse Viren's 1974 season (13:24, 28:24) as down year is sort of a stretch. He was ranked 5th (tfn) and about 10 sec. off the world record. Ranked ahead of Steve Prefontaine.
This goes back to the "Who's more talented Webb or Wheating" thread.
If talent doesn't go away, and Webb works his way back to being fit and healthy but still can't beat Wheating then...
This thread needs to get on the right track.
Talent NEVER goes away.
ABILITY goes away.
Talent is inherent and is there from birth until death. There are lots of talented runners out there who have yet to take their first step. We just don't have evidence of their talent yet.
ABILITY is what the runner does with that talent. If you don't train, your ability goes down. If you age, your ability goes down. Your talent though never changes.
