It's that good...
It's that good...
Agreed. I also love the announcing in the video, no one could have done it any better, and Komen's form is absolutely stunning. Like it was said during the race, his form looked like a sprinter.
you can tell in his voice that cram is just floored when he goes through 2k...
Absolutely. Though people constantly hurl EPO accusations at Komen, I still value this race as one of the greatest of all time. Everything about it - the pacing, the announcing, Komen's running - is fantastic. His 3000m records are truly the "Everests" of track running.
It's a shame Daniel Komen's rise and fall were both so meteoric. He was either incredibly doped (the cynical view which I'd prefer not to take) or one of the most talented runners ever.
"57 for the last lap, which is either silly..."
he was simply the best.
Imagine what wheating will do when he's as old as Komen was when he broke this record.

yep i bet he's smiling away counting his olympic gold medals
Yes, in my opinion this is the most impressive record on the books.
That 3k translates to a 7:55.75 two mile or essentially two 3:57.9 miles back to back.
However, I feel as though he was doped when he did this. I used to want to pretend that records like this were clean, but since there wasn't an EPO test until 2000, I feel as though it's highly suspect.
Either way it's still fun to watch.

No love for the rabbit? Didn't he go through 2,000 meters in 4:56?
Although it was a stunning run, no, his form did not look like that of a sprinter at any time during a sprint race.
It's nice to be appreciated. I ain't gonna lie though, 58 high for 7 and a half laps ain't jogging.
Wow...
The "Everests" of track running?
Give me a break.
The 3000m record is no more stunning than Bolt's 9.58 and 19.19, FloJo's 10.49, Johnson's 43.18, Koch's 47.60, etc..
All of these were performed by athletes who were one step ahead of the testing for whatever it was they were doing at the time, and are all equally as ridiculous as Komen's.
And yes, I agree, it was a truly amazing run/demonstration of pharmaceutical prowess.
One of the greatest runs we'll ever see. His form is perfect, total relaxation. It's crazy to think that no one else on the planet would be with 20 metres of him if they ran in the race. It's one of the best bits of pacemaking you'll ever see too. John Kosgei ran amazing just to get to 2k!!
I do think Komen was a bit freak though. If you watch most of his races he has pretty much no kick whatsoever. But I don't think there's ever been a guy so relaxed at 58-60 second pace. Watch his 5k record too for more perfection.

- sublime.
you do need to keep it in perspective
- hicham wouda probably been 0.5s of it either way if he hadn't had such a ridiculous route to his 2k split in his 7'23
- morceli was on for potentially a 7'21 in his wr - he ran something ridiculous like 2'24/2'25 in his last 1k
- the indoor 3k is possibly just as good if you use a statistical conversion of ~ 101/102 ( also shows geb was in about 7'21 shape in his 7'26i )
komen got a great set up - others didn't
No one said those records are not fantastic. However, they do not seem to be as far and above the competition as Komen's 3000m record is. Just take a look at the amount of performances from the past three years near those world records:
100m:
Tyson Gay: 2009 9.69 2.0 Shanghai 20/09/2009
Asafa Powell: 2008 9.72 0.2 Lausanne 02/09/2008
200m:
Tyson Gay: 2010 19.72 0.1 Monaco 22/07/2010
2009 19.58 1.3 New York City, NY 30/05/2009
Walter Dix: 2010 19.72 1.8 Eugene, OR 03/07/2010
2008 19.86 1.7 Eugene, OR 06/07/2008
I could go on for other athletes and events you've listed and I know I'm missing MANY other great 100m and 200m performances as well! I'm also aware of the fact that milliseconds mean a lot more in sprinting events than they do in distance events. But Komen's 3000m record is a whopping three seconds faster than any other performance ever recorded. Excepting El Guerrouj's 7:23, it is FIVE seconds faster than any other performance - ever - which is an absolutely staggering fact if you ask me.
If it pleases you though, I'll call them the "Everests" of distance track running.
If another athlete ran a 13:02, 12:46 and 7:20 close to each other would you not accuse this guy?
His whole profile fits that off a doper: knocks huge chunks of time off of his PR's, quick recovery, quick rise and fall to fame.
Is it me or does he look like he's running downhill??
Alone for half the race and still runs 12:39
