I know that Solinsky runs 100+mpw, and I've also heard him say that a huge chunk of that mileage is run at a tempoish pace.
My question is: what do high miles AND fast pace do for Solinsky? Obviously, yes, it helps him get faster, but how exactly?
Is he getting a stronger base? Is he training himself mentally to tolerate that pace? What sorts of physiological benefits is he getting that others aren't?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Basing your training off Solinsky's would be a recipe for disaster. Personally I think Solinsky is training wrong (too fast, not enough miles - there are a good number of high schoolers who run in the 90-110 mpw range. Though it might be badger miles so I really don't know. I'm witholding judgement), even though he is running fast.
I believe in the same method michael jordan used to get where he was (although it's two different sports, same concept). It's quite simple: Do what you want to be good at, a lot. i.e 3-5 hours of running a day. Workouts mainly for training your body to run fast, training runs are for recovery and building up your aerobic base.
The miles give him a bigger engine and the threshold running increases his efficiency at ever-improving speeds. Works for everyone. He probably varies it a lot, though, so "tempo" is used liberally.

Yes, clearly over 100 badger miles a week (probably 120ish real miles) is far too little for him, and if he would only slow down, dump that know-nothing Schumacher, and listen to a qualified coach like you, he'd be a great runner. Until then, he'll just have to take his lumps as a ho-hum 12:55/26:59 also-ran.
One of Jerry's signature "workouts" is the Sunday tempo run. They run as long as anyone on Sundays, and usually 10+ miles are at tempo pace.
Figure three workouts a week, at least one is a tempo run, plus these monster Sundays, and yeah, Chris probably runs nearly 20% of his mileage strictly at tempo pace.
Then consider he may finish a "recovery" run near tempo pace, yeah, he's running a lot of miles at a good speed.
Mileage does for Solinsky what it does for everyone. Running faster means he's doing more mileage (see: badger miles system) and getting a greater aerobic benefit as his system is taxed more.
Chris trains like a madman, and his body holds up exceptionally well, creating a circle of fast running.
a) Jerry was quoted saying that what chris says and what chris does are two completely different things
b)Jerry for the most part doesn't control his pace during normal runs (I believe). I believe there was even a stretch where Jerry wasn't around so Chris was training himself.
c)I said even though he IS running fast, I think he's going about it the wrong way. It's been 10 years in the making for chris. I'm sure he could be faster if he didn't hammer it everyday.
he doesn't run that fast on his recovery days relative to how fast he races.
120 badger at 5:45 pace is around 145 miles per week. He trains like wejo did but at sea level and with infinitely more talent.

Not necessarily - there may be some who benefit from this type of program, but they would be the exception, not the norm.
This is the problem with too many attitudes about training that predominate on these kinds of threads - too many people who think there is one correct pattern for all (cookie-cutter approach), and if only one can find that "one" program for all, then everyone could run fast, and since this has to be done in a group setting, it would be appropriate and beneficial for all. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are a number of training "principles" that must be followed (but vary in means of implementation), yet a multitude of ways to apply these to the different organisms (people) we all are.
As Malmo has said - too many people get caught up in the numbers (what does 5.40/mile really mean to Solinsky?). It's also true that Tempo and recovery mean different things to given individuals and can (and should) vary throughout a training progression/year - which is what "listening to one's body" is all about.
Ok first, if you think it's as easy as copying someone's training to run fast you're going to be disappointed(other's have already stated this in this thread). The whole point in having a coach is so that person can navigate you through the ups and downs. This person knows when you're doing too much and when you're not doing enough.
Second, do you really think that someone who is familiar with how Jerry trains him is going to post how it's being done? So take what people post with a grain of salt.
I will tell you one thing, Badger miles have become this mystery that really isn't a mystery. If you're supposed to run 10 miles at 7:00 pace, you go out and run 70 min and call it 10. So if someone went out and ran 6 min pace they'd still only get credit for 10 miles when they actually ran more. I was usually the guy who ran the 7 min pace because I needed it, but had plenty of teammates who ran the 6min pace. And we just ran so the pace was a guess, not an exact science.
I myself believed in running for time and not distance. If I felt good i'd maybe run faster but not longer than my prescribed time. Other times I might run slower if I need to recover. It's all about listening to your body.
