Yeah I wouldn't call that an average time, it's pretty damn fast.
You mean pre-drug days?
9.9x was still impressive back then.
9.84 STILL wows me.
9.84 in still conditions is very likely a drug-assisted time, and if not, is the fastest clean time ever run.
Look at the other times in the race--THEY look like clean times, even Bolt's, which would be an excellent clean time.
Gay's 9.84 sticks out like a sore thumb.
The other clean guys to run anywhere near that: Bailey's 9.84 needed a +0.7 wind, Surin's 9.84 needed a +0.2 wind,
Fasuba's 9.85 needed a +1.7 wind, Lewis's 9.86 needed a +1.2 wind, and Boldon's 9.86 needed a +1.8 wind.
The only things close to Gay's 9.84 (0.0w) are Surin's 9.84 (+0.2w) and Fredericks' 9.86 (-0.4w).
Not saying Gay couldn't be the clean guy with the fastest clockings ever, but the regularity of his performances is suspect.
Fredericks, Surin, Bailey, Lewis, Fasuba, Boldon--they were all basically 9.9 guys who had a great 9.8 race, once. Gay does it all the time. No way.
It was still a nice race, and a 9.84 is still amazing. It would have been more amazing, and more special, if we knew that it was clean.
I remember being WOWED by a ten flat on Friday, July 15, 1960.

Those that know Tyson Gay say he wouldn't take a paracetamol for a headache because he didn't know what was in it.. Never mind injecting himself with other people's blood
Sprint Geezer--
Check your facts. Boldon ran 9.86 four times. He was far from a 9.9 sprinter who had a single breakthrough into the 9.8 range. Boldon was a sprinter blessed (and cursed) with consistency when it came to the 100.
Also, Tyson's clean.

I'm not saying that Gay is doping, but this argument isn't any more legitimate than "he/she is the most tested athlete in the world", "has never failed a drug test", "is an advocate for increased testing", etc. These arguments have fooled us before. Marion Jones is a great example.
yes, you are saying that. when you get on an anonymous message board and insinuate things like that, idiots are going to take your dribble for fact. unless you're holding a cup full of his dirty pee, then you should have no say in an athletes reputation. i cant think of another sport where the fans try their hardest to bring down and ruin the names of marquee athletes.

This should
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/athletics/article6718956.eceGay has willingly been recruited to the US Anti-Doping Agency’s Project Clean, which includes extensive testing and blood profiling.
Get over yourself and tone down the paranoia.
Ato Boldon's bests:
9.86 (+1.8) = 9.94
9.86 (+0.4) = 9.88
9.86 (+0.1) = 9.86
9.86 (-0.4) = 9.83
9.87 (+1.3) = 9.93
9.88 (-0.1) = 9.87
9.88 (+2.0) = 9.97
9.89 (+0.8) = 9.93
9.90 (+0.7) = 9.93
9.90 (0.0) = 9.90
So there it is. Of his top 10, one high 9.9's, 4 mid-9.9's, 4 mid-to-high 9.8's, and one low-to-mid 9.8
Consistent? Absolutely! This is maybe the best body of 100m work out there, excluding obvious goons.
In fact, it just might be the best body of 100m work by any clean runner, ever. IF he was clean--his consistency puts him on the bubble of cleanliness, but I will say this for him:
The fact that he never ran faster than Ben Johnson is a big point in his favor, and for me, excludes him from the "obviously doped" category of Greene, Montgomery, and Gatlin. It also excludes him from the category of guys who are highly suspicious: Gay, and Powell, and from the category that is just plain ridiculous: Bolt.
He's still not in the "clean" class like Bailey, Surin, Lewis, Fasuba, Obikwelu, & Burrell, however.
And as for the "other guys" on the top lists, we can immediately discount Christie, Mitchell, etc..
Let's hear it for Ato Boldon, maybe the best clean 100m runner ever. Maybe.
Although he still wasn't as fast as Bob Hayes.
Sprint Geezer--
Your arguing basically that anything under 9.85 is drug-aided, and by itself that's just not credible. I also don't understand how you can place Greene in the "obviously doped" category and Lewis in the "clearly clean" category. Just because Greene went 9.79? There are more drug allegations surrounding Lewis than surrounding Greene, though Greene has suffered a small share of his own allegations.
This is only one way that drugs have ruined the sport. What was once stellar become commonplace.
Correction--Lewis is in the "clean" category, not "clearly clean"; I put clean in quotation marks because of Lewis's inclusion.
Yes, Greene is dirty because he went 9.79. Period. That and the obvious hypertrophy, the era, and other things. But the 9.79 is more than enough.
Not anything under 9.85 is dirty--if something between 9.82 or 9.83-9.85 was accomplished by someone regularly running 9.9's, with a good wind and temperature, ONCE or TWICE in a career, it is likely clean, like those in my "clean" category.
Greene is dirty at 9.79 (+0.1), 9.80 (+0.2), 9.86 (-0.2).
Not if you ignore the ridiculous crap that has been going on.
For me, ignoring 9.58, 9.69, 9.72, 9.77, 9.78, is just as easy as ignoring Johnson's 9.79.

Wait, why would he inject himself with OTHER people's blood? No athlete, dirty or clean, does that. At least not to my knowledge.
If one injected the Undertaker's blood, it may be possible to die yet still live.
Hey, it was The Truth Hurts who wrote that obvious error, not me.
